San Diego Padres General Manager A.J. Preller Addressed End Of Season Needs

With a quick exit from the playoffs, the Padres’ season came to an end. Therefore, the San Diego Padres’ general manager, A.J. Preller addressed some of the team’s end of season needs. He held  his end of season press conference last week. One of the most obvious needs is a manager. With Mike Schildt announcing his retirement, the manager position is now available for the Padres. Preller said he could tell that Shildt felt exhausted after the grind of a long season. It was nine days later that Shildt informed Preller of his plan to retire.

The managerial search could take some time to find the right candidate given Preller’s history with managers. He has had a reputation for rapidly going through managers. His next full-time manager will be his sixth in 12 seasons. The baseball world was shocked that Schildt had decided to retire. Especially given that he had become the first manager in Padres history to record back-to-back 90-win seasons. And he reached the postseason in both years at the helm. Expectations will be high for whomever takes on the manager role.

But there are also other concerns for the team, starting pitcher Yu Darvish being one of them. The veteran pitcher has yet to say what comes next regarding his storied career. He told mlb.com: “That’s something I’ll go into the offseason and think about,” Darvish said. “I can’t really wrap my mind around that right now.” It was difficult for him to contemplate the future after the Wild Card loss to the Cubs. Whether he continues to play may depend upon resolving the elbow issue that limited him to 15 starts this season. However, Preller remains in regular contact with Darvish.

Pitching is the main issue that the Padres have as they have to make a decision regarding pitcher Mason Miller. Preller worked his magic to obtain Miller at the trade deadline causing many to wonder if Miller would be converted to a starting pitcher. That question wasn’t answered as the Padres were more concerned about being in the playoff hunt. Well now it’s time for a decision to be made regarding Miller. The Padres have him under team control for the next four seasons.

Preller simply stated:

“At the end of the day, we’ll get together as a group, we’ll have our thoughts, we’ll definitely get Mason’s thoughts and see what he thinks is best. We’ll see how the offseason plays out, roster-wise. And then we’ll have some clear direction for him.”

He then went on to say that starting pitching is a clear need. Particularly since Michael King and Dylan Cease are slated to leave in free agency. Joe Musgrove will be returning from Tommy John surgery and Nick Pivetta will be part of the starting rotation. But they will need to add multiple starting-pitching options this winter, and it’s unclear what kind of budget they’ll have for it.
