San Diego Padres Are 20 Games Above .500 for First Time Since 2010

How can you not be romantic about baseball? Every season something occurs that not even the best script writer could predict. For instance, take a look at what is going on over in the NL West. Where a franchise has hit a milestone that they have not reached in over a decade. Tip a cap, the San Diego Padres are 20 Games above .500 for the first time since 2010.

And what’s wild, it is due in part to one of the team’s most entertaining players, Fernando Tatis Jr. You see, the Padres were playing against division rival, the San Francisco Giants and had already taken the series. However, on Sunday the organization was going for the jugular, the sweep. Plus, if they wanted to win game number 20 (over .500), losing was not an option.

SD had drawn first blood, scoring the game’s first run. But the Giants later tied things up, 1-1. But then it was time for the big man, the big bat, Tatis.

Fernando had been missing in action for a good chunk of the 2024 season due to injury. A fracture/stress reaction that needed to heal before he could return to the field. Nevertheless, even with the okay to play, the ball club and its medical staff had decided to err on the side of caution. Giving Tatis an off day every few games.

Sunday was selected as an off day. But the team needed a hit. They needed this game.

Tatis walked up to the plate. Literally coming off the bench, top of the eighth inning. And on the very first pitch he sees, Fernando knocks it out the park; homering to give the Padres the lead, 2-1. Legend.

But it wouldn’t be the Padres if they didn’t win with some finesse in the way of drama. Which is part of the reason they are so fun to watch in the first place. This team just leaves you on edge. Nevertheless, closer Suarez blows the save; the Giants tie it up and the game goes into extras. However, the Padres would come away victorious, 4-3.

But this late game fight we are seeing from San Diego is different. It just didn’t used to be this way. This team used to get down by one run and you just assumed it was over.

However, not the 2024 Padres. They fight. They win.

And it is great to see especially when you remember how many challenges this organization has overcome. The loss of the great Peter Seidler, massive payroll cut, Soto trade, new manager and of course numerous injuries. Yet, this team is coming together every game to get closer to winning that first championship for the city of San Diego at long last.

As Seidler once said, “One day soon the baseball gods will smile on the San Diego Padres, and we will have a parade.” Well by the looks of things, there’s plenty of grinning going on right now.
