In fact, the Chargers put up 145 yards of offense in the first quarter. And that led to the San Diego Chargers being able to upset the Kansas City Chiefs in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Friday night.

Let’s review all the field action. Mahomes who is usually so accurate with his passes, continued to overthrow his receivers in the first quarter. And while he used his legs to pick up yards or first downs he did have some puzzling moves he made. In one instance he was running for a first down and inexplicably stopped running allowing a defender to tackle him. On another occasion he was running and quickly veered out of bounds instead of sliding like he normally does. It felt like the Chiefs offense was out of sync.

Adding to the Chiefs chaos was the collision between Travis Kelce and Xavier Worthy early in the first quarter. On a crossing route, Kelce slammed into Worthy who left the game with a shoulder injury. Worthy was later downgraded to out for the rest of the game. It wasn’t until under five minutes were left on the clock in the second quarter that the Chiefs got on the board with a 35-yard field goal by Harrison Butker. And they tacked on one more 59-yard field goal before the time expired on the clock. The Chargers took a 13-6 lead into halftime.

However, the Chiefs looked more like the Chiefs in the second half with Mahomes passing and running for a touchdown. He finished the night with 258 yards and completed 24/39 passes attempted. One of those completed passes was an example of the Mahomes magic. He was being hotly pursed by the Chargers defense and was tripped up. As he was going down he just flipped the ball to Juju Smith-Schuster who somehow caught it and picked up a huge first down.

However, the game truly belonged to the Chargers from start to finish. The Chiefs had a chance to tie the score when they scored their first touchdown but the extra point was missed. Justin Herbert was clicking with his receivers as shown by his stats. He threw for 318 yards on 25/34 attempts along with three touchdowns. Quentin Johnston led the receivers with 79 yards, followed by Ladd McConkey with 74 and Keenan Allen with 68. So in the end, the Chargers came away with the 21-27 victory.

The season is young but Harbaugh’s team looks poised and ready to have another great season under his command. Moreover, if Herbert continues to consistently play up to this high level; the Bolts could easily find themselves in playoffs contention yet again.

The Los Angeles Chargers made the 2024 NFL playoffs, securing a wild-card spot with a win against the New England Patriots in Week 17. They finished with an 11-6 record and entered the playoffs as the No. 5 seed. However, their postseason run was short-lived, as they lost to the Houston Texans 32-12 in the Wild Card round.

Nevertheless, the way LA just played in Brazil this is a team on a mission. And they look good, real good. So then who is next up for the Chargers? The Las Vegas Raiders shall be their opponents on Monday, September 15.
