San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama Tops Tim Duncan’s 40-Point Record

NBA fans we have to appreciate what we are blessed to witness. Right before our own eyes we are seeing greatness unfold. This man already helped create a new fun rivalry (Spurs/OKC) that produced some of the most fun, thrilling games of the season. But now he’s making some franchise history. The San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama has now topped Tim Duncan’s 40-point record.

Wemby snatched the crown after defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 136-104. In the first quarter alone he was well on his way to having a high scoring game. Some fans even joked online via social media that it seemed like Victor might drop a Wilt Chamberlain 100 point game.

In just 26 minutes, Wemby had himself a career night. Posting 40 PTS, 12 REB, 2 STL and 4 3PM. Leading to a blowout win against the Lakers; and making it five wins in a row for the Spurs. Furthermore, Victor’s 37 points in the first half alone is the most points in any half of a regular-season game by a Spur since tracking began in the PXP era (1997–98).

Amazing. And to think that Wembanyama is just getting started. In comparison so far to Tim Duncan; here’s how the pair compare stats-wise.

Nevertheless, the National Basketball Association acknowledged Victor Wembanyama’s historic achievement. The league stated,

“WEMBY HISTORY: Victor Wembanyama set San Antonio Spurs franchise records in the play-by-play era with 25 points in a quarter (first) and 37 in a half (first) during last night’s win over the Los Angeles Lakers. The 2026 NBA All-Star finished with 40 points, his sixth career 40-point game – tying Manu Ginóbili for the fourth most in team history and surpassing Tim Duncan and LaMarcus Aldridge, who had five each. Wembanyama and the Spurs have won five straight games entering tonight’s matchup against the Golden State Warriors (10pm/et, ESPN).”

One last fun fact regarding Victor Wembanyama’s 37 points after just two quarters. His 37 is the most by a player in the opening half this season. However, with plenty of season left there’s still time to see even more from this incredible athlete.
