San Antonio Spurs Have Released Jeremy Sochan to Allow Him to Find New Team

Looks like the divorce is final. While San Antonio is having a great season, they are still making changes. The San Antonio Spurs have released Jeremy Sochan to allow him to find a new team. ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed this decision and move stating,

“The San Antonio Spurs and forward Jeremy Sochan have agreed on his release to allow the 2023 All-Rookie team member to become a free agent, sources tell ESPN. Sochan is expected to decide among multiple interested teams.

Sochan made the Rising Stars team in his first two seasons after being the No. 9 pick in 2022. He and the Spurs worked on trade options at the deadline to find a new opportunity for him and landed on his release this week.”

Jared Weiss of The Athletic on Wednesday mentioned that Sochan had not been happy about his lack of playing time. Weiss reports,

“Spurs have made the Jeremy Sochan waiving official. Interesting turn of events after a deal didn’t get done at the deadline to find him a new home. Previously reported that Sochan did not plan to ask for a release shortly after the deadline, but that changed over the past week as he remained out of Mitch Johnson’s rotation.”

Interestingly, less than 24 hours before news of Jeremy Sochan official waiving hit, Coach Mitch Johnson was asked about Sochan’s limited use in the Spurs rotation. Mitch Johnson’s position was that “he is fully aware that Jeremy Sochan wants to play more. He expects Jeremy to continue to be a professional and to show up for work, to be a good teammate and to be ready when that opportunity comes.”

So then, what is Sochan’s next possible opportunity? Who were some of the organizations interested in Jeremy before the recent trade deadline passed? NBA insider, Michael Scotto shared, “The Knicks and Suns were among the teams who had trade discussions surrounding former Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan prior to the trade deadline, as I previously reported. Something to keep in mind as he becomes a free agent now and both teams have open roster spots.” An interesting development, will have to wait and see if any of these teams or others decide to give Jeremy a chance.
