Sam Cosmi Getting Mega Deal With Washington Commanders
This has been a year for huge deals getting done in the NFL. And today the trend continued in our nation’s capitol. Guard Sam Cosmi is getting a mega deal done with the Washington Commanders. Last season Cosmi played guard for the first time in his career. His goal was to become the best in the league at the position. Apparently he reached that goal since he’s now going to be paid like he’s the best.
On x.com Adam Schefter posted about the contract:
Commanders guard Sam Cosmi signed a four-year, $74 million contract extension that includes over $45 million guaranteed, per source.
Contract negotiations between the two parties started weeks ago. The Commanders were intent on getting a deal done rather than let Cosmi hit free agency next march. So they made sure to lock down the offensive lineman whom general manager Adam Peters referred to as “a pillar of our offensive line.” The fact that he has become so proficient at right guard is admirable considering his lack of playing time. He never played the position in high school or college.
On the professional level, Cosmi played just 34 snaps at right guard in 2022 against the New York Giants. Although he played well an injury kept him sidelined for the next two weeks. At the end of the season he asked former head coach Ron Rivera what role he saw him in for 2023. When Rivera said right guard, Cosmi was determined to master the new position.
“I just feel like my trajectory is going like this,” Cosmi said while raising his hand in an incline. “I feel way more comfortable this year. You could see the tape from last year. As each game progressed, I felt like I was more and more fitting that role.”

Current head coach Dan Quinn is familiar with Cosmi’s skill from his time with the Dallas Cowboys. He commented on what it’s like working directly with Cosmi now:
“Sam Cosmi has shown really consistent play,” Quinn said during training camp. “You would’ve thought he’d been a guard for a really long time and in fact he wasn’t, from moving from tackle to guard. I would say his ability to stay square, to pull. He’s an athlete that’s inside. He’s somebody that has impressed me by the size of him, his movement to go.”
Despite getting this new deal Cosmi is not slowing down. He still seeks to be the best and prove it every day.
