Saints WR Rashid Shaheed Gets Extension – Shaquil Barrett Retires

As we get closer to the start of the 2024 NFL regular season events continue to happen. Saints WR/kick returner Rashid Shaheed gets an extension and Shaquil Barrett retires. As reported by Adam Schefter, “The Saints and exclusive rights free agent WR/returner Rashid Shaheed reached agreement on a one-year, $5.2 million contract extension, per source. Shaheed was an All-Pro and Pro-Bowl selection last season. The deal was negotiated by his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.”

He started his NFL career in 2022 when he was signed by the Saints. He was an undrafted free agent out of Weber State. Shaheed turned heads when he was elevated from the practice squad in mid-October of his rookie year. Against the Cincinnati Bengals, on his first offensive touch, he ran the ball for a 44 yard touchdown. He has quickness and shiftiness and he can play on offense and special teams. The Saints must like what they see since they got the extension done.

And in another Schefter report, Shaquil Barrett announced his retirement. “Two-time Pro-Bowl linebacker Shaquil Barrett informed the Dolphins that he wants to spend more time with his family and he now will be retiring from the NFL. Barrett also was a two-time Super Bowl champion who played four seasons with Denver and five with Tampa Bay.” 

Although he was an undrafted free agent he really shined in Denver as a rookie. The Broncos went on to hoist the Lombardi trophy in Super Bowl 50. In his first season with the Buccaneers, Barrett led the league with 19.5 sacks. He earned his first Pro Bowl honor and played a huge role in helping the Buccaneers’ win Super Bowl LV. They thrashed the Buccaneers 31-9.

He is signed with the Dolphins but chose to retire. Barrette posted his farewell on Instagram with the following statement:

“It’s time for me to hang it up. It’s been a great ride and I appreciate everything that came with it over the years. I’m ready to shift my full focus to my wife and kids and helping them realize there dreams and catch em. Anyone who caught their dreams before know the work, time and consistency required to reach them. I’m ready to start building them skills up in my kids which will take 100% commitment. Ik (I know) to some it’ll be a surprise but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been more clear then it is now.”

So as one undrafted free agent continues his burgeoning career, another one ends his triumphant career. Congrats and best wishes to both Shaheed and Barrett.
