Safety Josh Metellus Agreed To Terms On New Extension With Minnesota Vikings

He’s been described as the hybrid dynamo, having played in multiple defensive positions. As he entered into his sixth NFL training camp he was able to secure a multiyear deal. It was announced on Saturday that safety Josh Metelllus agreed to terms on a new extension with the Minnesota Vikings. Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell  delivered the good news during his media session. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah also commented on the new deal prior to Martellus taking the podium.

Details of the deal were outlined by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:

“Safety Josh Metellus and the Vikings reached agreement today on a three-year, $36 million contract extension with a max value of $42 million that includes $25 million guaranteed, per agent Drew Rosenhaus.”

Under defensive coordinator Brian Flores, O’Connell noted that he counted Metellus lining up at seven different positions in one game last season. Noting his versatility O’Connell stated:

“Throughout Flo’s time here, they’ve continued to layer upon layer things in the defense based upon his roles, which are inside the box as a linebacker type, a down safety, big nickel,” O’Connell said. “He can play man-to-man coverage at all five spots, whether it’s a really good back — we put him on the Christian McCaffreys of the world — we put him on dynamic tight ends, bigger slot receivers, and it allows our corners to stay matched and then also hold a lot of the disguise that we want to show, as well.”

Obviously Metellus has the kind of versatility that makes a DC’s job easier and more imaginative. But Metellus had to work hard to get to where he is now. He was selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft but was initially cut from the squad. However, he fought his way back onto the team and has continued earning respect and responsibility.

Adofo-Mensah said Metellus has become a “program player” who “loves his community, loves his team, loves the fans, loves the city.” And Martellus is happy with the role he has played on the team. Staying with the team is what he wanted and now he knows he will be there for some time to come.

“I wanted to be here. I love it here. This is home. I want to finish my career here,” Metellus said. “I feel like I embody exactly what we want to build here, and I want to win a ring for this city. I understand the city is due for something big. So I’m just pouring everything I have into this.”

We expect to see big things again from Metellus this season based on his 2024 stats:

– 10 starts – 103 total tackles – 5 passes defensed – 2 interceptions (career high) – 1 forced fumble – 1,192 total snaps (team high)

So congratulations to Josh Metellus on his amazing versatility and new contract extension!
