Sacramento Kings Cut Ties With GM Monte McNair—Work to Finalize Deal With Scott Perry

And the revolving carousel just keeps on turning. The regular season has come to its completion and it is now that time of year when franchises get to work to either change regimes are switch up players. Or sometimes a combination of both. Currently a Northern California organization is busy making such changes. Yes, the Sacramento Kings cut ties with GM Monte McNair— while working to finalize a deal with longtime NBA executive Scott Perry.

Just less than 24 hours ago the first bomb hit. It was reported that, “The Sacramento Kings and general manager Monte McNair are mutually parting ways. McNair spent five seasons running the Kings, winning NBA executive of the year in 2023 when Sacramento went 48-34 and snapped a record 16-year drought to make the playoffs.”

ESPN’s Shams Charania laid out plainly what had occurred under McNair’s tenure. While there had been some improvement under Monte (to be completely fair); the team still did not perform up to the level they strongly desire to be at. Nonetheless, Charania states,

“The Kings have won 40 or more games in three straight seasons under McNair’s leadership. Before this streak, they had not won 40 games in any season since 2005-06.

The Kings had a .488 win percentage under McNair — compared to a .362 win percentage for the 15 years prior.”

So, like we said… improvement. However, truth be told, Sacramento is continuously missing out on the playoffs. Therefore, they have not had the opportunity to make a deep run; much less win a title. And fans are ready to experience better.

Furthermore, after the the Kings’ latest play-in loss you could sense something brewing. Change was coming. And it has officially arrived.

Sacramento is moving on and hopefully farther  upward. Charania mentions,

“The Sacramento Kings are finalizing a deal to hire longtime NBA executive Scott Perry as their new general manager, sources tell ESPN. Perry spent three months with the Kings in 2017 before leaving for the Knicks. Perry started his exec career in 2000 with Detroit.”

Wow. That was a fast search. Enough to give you whiplash. Nonetheless, while But Perry is credited with some highs and lows during his career. The most important thing is he has experience, so then hopefully Scott will be able to continue to improve the team’s performance and roster situation.
