Sacramento is looking for a spark. A catalyst to help springboard the franchise upward to new heights. And they believe they have the perfect solution. Currently, the Sacramento Kings and Doug Christie are finalizing a multi-year head coach contract.
Yes, the Kings want Christie to move from interim to the head coach position. Under his guidance this season, the team did see improvement. Therefore, this decision on the part of the Sacramento franchise is not too surprising.
Furthermore, Christie is a great fit for the job because of the history he personally shares with the team. Back in the day, Doug Christie was a starting guard for the Sacramento Kings in the early 2000s. During his 15 seasons in the NBA, Christie spent five of them with the Kings. After retiring as a player, Doug went on to become an assistant coach in the Kings organization – and now flashing forward to 2025 is the franchise’s next head coach.
Moreover, having now been a player and a coach for the Kings; Doug Christie no doubt has plenty of passion and enthusiasm for the team. That’s definitely what any organization would want in a coach. An individual who has a strong connection to the team, culture as well as players and really wants to see them succeed.

Nevertheless, since losing in the play-in tournament; Sacramento has been busy making changes. For instance, the team parted ways with general manager Monte McNair. And in no time flat had moved on quickly, hiring Scott Perry to take over the role. Now, they also have a new coach.
Regarding the Kings new head coach hiring ESPN’s Shams Charania reports,
“The Sacramento Kings and interim coach Doug Christie are finalizing a multiyear contract to make Christie the franchise’s next head coach, sources tell ESPN. Christie’s agent, Andy Miller of Klutch Sports, negotiated a new deal for the Kings’ full-time job this week.
Sacramento went 27-24 this season under Christie, ranking ninth in offensive efficiency during that span and going 13-10 in clutch time games compared to 6-13 earlier in the campaign, per ESPN Research. Kings hired Scott Perry as their new GM, and now make decision on next coach.”
What’s next? A little more “house cleaning.” Christie is expected to restructure his coaching staff in the offseason after inheriting former coach, Mike Brown’s assistants in the coaching change. Nevertheless, the Kings are feeling confident about these changes and look forward to keep building into a new era in the coming months.
