Sabrina Ionescu Drops Playoffs Career-High 36 Points to Eliminate Atlanta Dream

The New York Liberty have never won a championship. But the WNBA franchise would like to change that narrative this year; and tonight they took the first vital step. Surviving round one against the Dream and advancing to the semifinals. One of the reasons for this success is NY’s dynamic point guard who continued to put on a clinic in Game 2. On Tuesday, Sabrina Ionescu drops a playoffs career-high of 36 points to eliminate the Atlanta Dream from the postseason.

In case you’re wondering: Sabrina Ionescu stats vs Atlanta:

36 PTS

9 AST

3 STL

12-23 FG

5-11 3P

7-7 FT

But truthfully all season, not just Sabrina; but the entire organization has been on a roll. For instance, the Liberty’s 19-4 record is their best start to a season in franchise history, and it bodes well for their quest to return to the WNBA Finals. Twelve of the 13 teams in WNBA history to start a season with that record made the Finals that year, with 10 winning the championship. This year the Liberty would finish the regular season with a 32-8 record.

Nonetheless, last postseason things didn’t go quite the way New York wanted. They lost to the Las Vegas Aces in the Finals. This year they want a different outcome. A different ending.

After Tuesday’s game Sabrina Ionescu discussed how the New York Liberty still has some unfinished business. Yes, the win was nice. But it is just one step towards the ultimate goal… a championship.

Ionescu also mentions the role the fans have played in the Liberty’s passion to battle hard in these playoffs. Sabrina states,

“Do whatever it takes to win. They came out and they played a hell of a game. And we just came out here and took care of business.

We owed it to these fans who came out here tonight and supported us. We’re not us without you guys. And we need you guys every step of the way because we got some unfinished business.”

In a separate interview session Ionescu also added:

“The ultimate goal is what it is. But, you know, it’s every single game is a championship game to get to that final goal. And obviously our goal is to not lose at home. So this was really important for us to come out, take these two and have a couple days off and kind of rest, recharge and get ready for whatever it is we’re going to play.”

Yes, this is far from over. Plenty of playoffs left. New York now gets a couple days off. The Liberty’s next matchup will be in the Semifinals on Sunday, September 29th. The start time is yet to be revealed.
