Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart Plan to Return to the New York Liberty
With most of the league being free agents due to the recent CBA negotiations ordeal; the WNBA could look very different soon. However, two star players are making it clear that they are staying put. Remaining loyal to the organization and team that they love. Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart plan to return to the New York Liberty and not test free agency. Stewart announced her return plans on her podcast, Game Recognize Game.
During her most recent episode, Stevie squashed any doubts or concerns made evident through the women’s basketball rumor mill. Stewart told her listeners,
“I’m just gonna set the record straight here: I will be staying in New York. I’m not planning on taking any free agency meetings even though I’m an unrestricted free agent. My family is set up here. We’re solid here.”
The New York Liberty has been one of the dominant teams in the league. Both financially and in terms of winning. The Liberty is valued at close to half a billion dollars. A key number to keep in mind since the Connecticut Sun was recently purchased for $300 million; in order to bring the Comets back to Houston, Texas.
Nevertheless, Breanna Stewart and Sabrina staying with the Liberty is not hard to understand when you consider how successful the team has been. Thanks to the likes of Stewie (the MVP winner in 2023) and Ionescu the franchise finally got the monkey off their back and won the organization’s first championship. As of June 2025, the New York Liberty started with the best record in franchise history (8-0), following up their 2024 championship season.

After Breanna Stewart announced she’s re-signing with the Liberty, Sabrina Ionescu told reporters she’ll also be returning to NY. Similarly to Stewart, Sabrina says, “I’m where I’m supposed to be… so excited to be able to sign… and be able to start our season and get going in New York.” We can’t wait either. The 2026 WNBA season begins May 8.
