Russell Wilson Named Starting QB Chiefs Acquired Bailey Zappe
It was meant to be a battle for the starting quarterback position. But one quarterback seemed to get the majority of the reps. Another was a fan favorite but didn’t make the roster cut. Russell Wilson was named the starting QB for the Pittsburgh Steelers today while the Kansas City Chiefs acquired Bailey Zappe. But we’ll talk about Wilson first. Head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that Wilson will get the starting nod when the Steelers open the regular season Sept. 8 in Atlanta.
Tomlin went on to talk about Wilson’s career:
“Russ’ resume is a unique one in terms of length and success,” said Tomlin. “That tends to play a factor in the decision making, but not from a decision-making perspective. It’s just the fruits of his labor. He’s seen and done a lot, and I think that was displayed in the way he played and conducted himself. He’s got a legitimate deep ball, not only in terms of arm strength, but in terms of accuracy,” Tomlin said. “We’ve got some guys that are capable of getting down the field in a lot of ways. So, we’re excited about that.”
Although it was meant to be a battle for the position, Wilson got more reps during the offseason. When he suffered a calf injury that allowed Justin Fields to get more opportunities. But in the end it wasn’t enough to edge out Wilson. However, Tomlin did indicate that packages with Fields on the field are “certainly on the table.” And he said the Steelers are “open to weaponizing” Fields’ athletic ability, per ESPN.com,

Meanwhile, fan favorite Bailey Zappe didn’t survive the New England Patriots roster cut. Bailey had sparked some excitement in what was a dismal 2023 season for the Patriots. But as reported on patriots.com: The three quarterbacks the Patriots kept all have distinct roles: (Jacoby) Brissett is the bridge/mentor, (Drake) Maye is the future, and (Joe) Milton is a high-upside flier. However, there is good news for Bailey. He is reported to have a deal in place to sign with the Chiefs practice squad.
Regarding the Patriots starting quarterback, head coach Jerod Mayo had this to say:
“I know everyone wants to know that. I’m going to talk to the individual players tomorrow — I’m going to have a team meeting tomorrow — and then I’ll get it to you guys,” Mayo said. “Yes, we’ve made a decision; just haven’t communicated. And honestly, I want those guys to hear it first from me before they hear it from someone else.”
