Russell Wilson is to Be Cut By the Broncos in March of 2024

Business is cold and very cruel world. This is especially true in the sports industry; where one day a player is a hot commodity and the next day, damaged goods. Case in point, the situation currently going down in Denver. News is that NFL quarterback, Russell Wilson is to be cut by the Broncos, in just a matter of weeks.

This “cut” seems to be more directed towards money than Wilson’s level of play. Dianna Russini a writer for The Athletic reports,

“Russell Wilson is expecting to be cut by the Denver Broncos in March, per league sources. For almost two months, the quarterback has been starting knowing the organization was most likely going to move on him from after this season.

The Broncos reached out to Wilson’s representatives in late October and explained that Wilson would lose the starting job and be made inactive for the rest of the season if he did not defer the injury guarantee trigger date that he has for 2025, per multiple league sources.

Wilson has $37 million in injury guarantees for 2025 that will become guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2024 league year in March. Lawyers, including some with the NFLPA, were involved, and no changes were made to the contract.

It was explained, the Broncos never told Wilson if or when they would bench him this season, he just played until he was told this morning he was no longer starting.”

Wow. If Russell was fully aware of what is coming down the pipeline for him; then hats off to him. He continues to play hard for his team, winning four of six games during this entire trying time period.

Moreover, Emory Hunt of CBS Sports seems to agree with the above sentiments. He states,

“The fact that Russell Wilson was helping actively win games while all of that was going on behind the scenes says a TON about his talent & character.”

Agreed. It’s not easy putting on a good face and continuing to do your job (and improve); while dealing with negativity. Former quarterback, Robert Griffin III sums it up well,

“Russell Wilson’s biggest opposition this year was Sean Payton. Embarrassed him in the media, on the sideline and every chance he got. After a long year of showing the locker room that Russ was never his guy, he benched him despite his improved play.”
