He had been conducting what was referred to as a “hold-in” during training camp. Meaning that he reported to camp but didn’t fully participate in practices or team activities. That caused him to miss the team’s first preseason game. However, he did return to practice on Tuesday after his week-long “hold-in” and fully participated throughout Tuesday’s session. Therefore, it was not surprising that running back James Cook and the Buffalo Bills had agreed to a new contract extension.
After having good and honest conversations the two sides were able to come to an agreement. As reported by Adam Schefter the details are as follows:
A deal has been reached: Two-time Pro Bowl RB James Cook and the Buffalo Bills reached agreement a contract extension, per his agents Zac Hiller and Matt Leist of LAA. The deal includes the most guaranteed money for a running back in the last five years.
Terms: James Cook is signing a four-year, $48 million extension that includes $30 million guaranteed. “James could only envision himself as a Buffalo Bill,” said agent Zac Hiller of LAA, who negotiated the deal. “We are extremely thankful to the entire Bills organization and glad we could make that happen.”
Confirming the deal was the Bills’ general manager Brandon Beane as held a press conference this afternoon. Regarding the deal he stated:
“We want to draft and develop and re-sign,” Beane said. “You guys know all the money we’ve doled out this offseason. This is another draft pick that we’re proud of and excited to extend. Fortunately, late last night, we got it across the finish line.”
It was Cook’s desire to remain with the Buffalo Bills so he was happy to get the deal done. As noted by his agent Zac Hiller, “James could only envision himself as a Buffalo Bill,” Hiller said. “We are extremely thankful to the entire Bills organization and glad we could make that happen.”

Running back is a thankless job and is always undervalued because they often have a short shelf life. They endure a lot of crushing tackles, hard running and extensive blocking. As a result of the brutality of the position their careers often end too early. Hence ownership does not like to invest a lot of money in the position. Besides they believe that there will always be someone else to take the place of the running back put out to pasture.
