Rory McIlroy Wins Second Straight Masters

Rory McIlroy Wins Second Straight Masters—First Back-to-Back Champion Since Tiger Woods

Seriously, did anyone really doubt Rory? He was the favorite entering the tournament and even while tackling a few stressful situations; he met the challenge and came out on top. Rory McIlroy held on to win his second straight Masters, becoming the first back-to-back champion since Tiger Woods in 2002.

Speaking of back-to-backs. Besides Woods there are some other names and good company that McIlroy will now join. With his second green jacket now secured, Rory Mcllroy joins Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus as the only champions to win in consecutive years. Therefore, Rory McIlroy becomes the fourth golfer to win successive Masters titles, and clinches his sixth major.

Marty Smith of ESPN had the opportunity and privilege of sitting down with Rory McIlroy late Sunday night after he repeated as Masters Champion. The pair talked pressure and joy and journeys; experience and execution. Also, what is this champ’s view of his place in history now. Rory revealed to Smith,

“We lose a lot more in golf than we win, so when the winning comes around you celebrate it to the fullest. We’ll have a good time tonight and I’ll probably have a sore head flying back to Florida tomorrow morning. Today I tie Nick (Faldo). So there will be that conversation. It’s a cool conversation to be a part of. Again, it took me 10 years to win my fifth major, and my sixth came right after it. I won’t put a number on it, but I don’t want to stop here.

Walking off the 18th tee not knowing where my ball was, was the greatest moment of stress. It could be anywhere. I never felt like I was out of it. I never felt like I had to press. If I just don’t make any bogeys and limit mistakes, knowing how the Back 9 goes, if I was the one not to make the mistakes I’d be in a good spot.

I’m absolutely delighted to get it done. Having a six-shot lead going into the weekend, would have been a bitter to pill to swallow if I didn’t get it done. Of all the big sports (golf) is the most challenging mentally. It’s hard to stay in the same mental space for four days in a row. [I kept telling myself] just keep going. Keep your head down and keep going. If you put the hours in and work on the right things, eventually it will come out good for you.

I thought it was so difficult to win last year because of trying to win The Masters and the grand slam. This year I realized it’s just really difficult to win The Masters. I said to myself on 17 tee, I just need four more good swings.

I made one.”

A very nice chat indeed. Rory McIlroy becomes the first golfer since Tiger Woods (2001–02) to win back-to-back Masters. The victory adds a record $4.5M winner’s check, pushing his career earnings to $114.69M—now just $6.3M behind Tiger Woods ($120.99M).
