Rockets Jabari Smith Jr Intends to Sign Five-Year $122 Million Rookie Contract Extension
The Houston franchise just made a huge move by bringing KD to town. But now they are showing that they wholeheartedly believe in the youth on their roster as well. On Sunday, sources confirmed that the Rockets Jabari Smith Jr intends to sign a five-year $122 million rookie contract extension. The extension will be fully guaranteed and with no player or team options.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported details on how the extension came together. And provided a nice comprehensive summary of all of the Rockets recent roster moves. He states,
“Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. intends to sign a five-year, $122 million rookie contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Rockets officials and Smith’s agent, Wallace Prather of LIFT Sports Management, negotiated the fully guaranteed deal through 2030-31 season.
Recap of Rockets business over the last 15 days:
Extensions: Jabari Smith Jr., Steven Adams, Ime Udoka
Free agents retained: Fred VanVleet, Jae’Sean Tate, Aaron Holiday, Jeff Green
And the blockbuster Kevin Durant acquisition.”
The Houston Rockets have themselves a good one in Jabari. They are locking in the only player from the 2022 draft class to accumulate 2,500 points and 1,500 rebounds so far. Smith was the third overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft; and has played three seasons for the Rockets averaging 13 points as well as 7.5 rebounds in 212 regular-season games. And he still has plenty of opportunity for growth.

Therefore, Houston is betting on talent and potential. The Rockets firmly believe that Smith possesses a lot of upside; so then if he continues to develop and progress then this extension could prove to be a real steal for the team.
Plus, Jabari will have the opportunity to play with one of the best shooters in the game, Kevin Durant. KD was just the ninth player in NBA history to have recorded at least 22,000 points, 5,000 rebounds, 3,000 assists and 900 blocks. And that’s on top of Durant garnering MVP accolades, multiple Olympic gold medals (4) and two championships.
Jabari Smith Jr. will definitely learn plenty playing with and watching KD in action. Therefore, this is a great situation that the Rockets are currently creating. Combining a great youthful core and strong veteran presence.
