Review Of AFC/NFC Championship Games – What Went Wrong?
Sunday’s games were jam packed with action and a lot of questions. So let’s do a quick review of the AFC/NFC Championship games to see what went wrong with the losing teams. First up is the AFC game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens certainly look like the dominant team they had been all season. They were the top rushing team in the league but not yesterday.
I believe Ravens podcaster Sarah Ellison @sgellison breaks it down so well as to what happened. Here are some of the points she posted on social media (X formerly Twitter):
- The Ravens offense didn’t show up.
- It starts with the OC. Todd Monken abandoned the run from the jump. He made no adjustments that worked.
- Lamar Jackson had a couple heroic plays, but outside of that was off on the deep ball. He was sack-stripped early, and then the backbreaker was the INT in the end zone.
- The offensive line got bullied.
- Zay Flowers was one of the few WRS to show up, but he let his youthful inexperience show with a taunting penalty and cutting his hand in frustration. He fumbled at the 1-yardline.
- The team was undisciplined all day. They had five 15-yard penalties.
- The defense started off very shaky, but clamped down. Giving up 17 points to Mahomes and Co. is nothing to be mad about. Eventually the unit broke in the end, but it was bound to happen with no offense going on the other side.
- When two heavyweights are going head-to-head, it’s your superstars that make the difference. Mahomes and Kelce made plays. Ravens didn’t.
In addition, head coach John Harbaugh didn’t make adjustments to the game plan. If you ran the ball all season why stop in the championship game?
Review Of the AFC/NFC Championship Games – What Went Wrong?
As for the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers it was no great mystery what happened there. The game was Detroit’s for the taking. They jumped out to a lead and was in full control in the first half. But mistakes made in the second half killed their chances of going to the Super Bowl.
Skipping a field goal attempt on fourth down and not converting. Missing tackles, fumbling the ball, and burning a timeout all contributed to the fourth quarter collapse. However, head coach, Dan Campbell has been a risk-taker all season. So it makes sense he would stick with the plan that got them to the Championship.
But that doesn’t make the loss any less painful.
