Resolution Submitted To Allow NFL Players To Participate In Flag Football In 2028 Olympics
NFL owners will be coming together next week for the annual Spring League Meeting. They will have an interesting proposition to consider as they all meet together. A resolution has been submitted to allow NFL players to participate in Flag Football that will be part of the 2028 Olympics. Per the resolution, no more than one player from each team can participate in the 2028 Olympics. However, each team’s designated international player will be able to participate in Flag Football event for his own country.
Of course, there will have to be rules and stipulations put in place to protect both the player and the football team. Therefore, the following guidelines have been suggested:
- Permitting players under an NFL Player Contract to try out for a flag football team
participating in the 2028 Olympics; - Limiting NFL Player participation to no more than one NFL Player from the roster of
each NFL Club for each team participating in the 2028 Olympics (in addition to
permitting each NFL Club’s designated International Player to play for his country) - Providing appropriate injury protection, and Salary Cap credit, for any NFL Player who is
injured while authorized to participate in flag football activities related to the 2028
Olympic Games through the placement of one or more League-wide insurance policies. - An agreement that Olympic flag football teams will implement certain minimum
standards for medical staff and field surfaces to be eligible for an NFL Player to
participate in Olympic flag football for such team; - A schedule for flag football games and related events in such a way that does not
unreasonably conflict with an NFL player’s League and club commitments.
According to NFL.com, fans worldwide have been clamoring for NFL stars to participate in the 2028 Olympics.
Resolution Submitted To Allow NFL Players To Participate In Flag Football In 2028 Olympics
The NFL has it’s own flag football program called NFL Flag which was launched in 1994. Their goal was to make football accessible to all children no matter their age, size or gender. And today the program has more than 750,000 participants. To further increase interest in flag football, in 2023 the NFL turned the Pro Bowl into the Pro Bowl Games. Which included the marquee flag football event on Sunday.
But it seems that NFL fans have lost interest in the new format of the Pro Bowl Games. Fans were already complaining that tackle football was slowly turning into flag football. So is flag football truly what NFL fans want? And will they want to see their favorite players playing it in the 2028 Olympics? Even former quarterback Tom Brady understood that fans are frustrated with the direction football is going.
“There’s so many people that want it less and less physical, it’s more like flag football, which is going to be in the Olympics in 2028,” Brady said. “Maybe football goes to flag football over a period of time.”
On the other hand, flag football is played by more than 20 million people in more than 100 countries. Flag football is expected to overtake tackle worldwide in terms of organized participation opportunities in the next few years, according to the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).
Will Flag Football Replace Tackle Football In The Future
NFL fans are used to seeing large men crash and bang into each other. But as the league continues to flag and fine players for tough hits the game is becoming less recognizable. And if fans don’t get the contact that they are used to seeing will they stop watching the game? But the league has a different opinion:
“The membership believes that participation by NFL players in flag football during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California will support such growth and advance several league interests, including increasing fan and public interest in flag football, expanding the global reach of the NFL,” the resolution stated.
I guess we’ll have to wait until 2028 to see how well flag football is received in Los Angeles.
