Reports of $300 Million Offers for Yoshinobu Yamamoto -Passan Says This Is Inaccurate

In an era where sports reporting integrity is at an all time low, it is nice to see those refusing to diminish the game and iron out inaccuracies. Case in point, all of the news, stories and reports of $300 million offers for Yoshinobu Yamamoto. While he is a guy that many ball clubs are after. So far, these numbers are completely off base.

Yamamoto will walk away with an extremely lucrative contract. Especially, since he is one of the best pitchers coming into the MLB. However, $300 million is not a mark that teams have even remotely hit yet. How do we know that?

For one thing, you have to look closer at what is occurring within the negotiations. And when you look there and focus on just that; you come to the realization that things are still in the infancy stage. Basically, the situation is just really beginning, and starting to heat up.

With several notable free agents off the table, i.e. Aaron Nola, Jung Hoo Lee and of course, the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes. It is not surprising to see baseball franchises switching gears and attention to Yamamoto. Pitching is a serious need in the MLB right now. Multiple teams do not have all the pitching they need in order to get through a regular season; much less to make an effective deep run in the postseason. Therefore, Yamamoto is a hot commodity currently.

So then, what is the status of contract negotiations? What might the final number look like on paper? Well truth be told, currently no one knows. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reveals,

“In recent weeks, it has jumped to $250 million. And recently, multiple reports suggested teams already had offered Yamamoto deals in excess of $300 million. Those reports, sources said, are inaccurate. Multiple high-ranking officials trying to sign Yamamoto told ESPN that teams were asked to give a preliminary bid at the start of the process to ensure they were serious — but not necessarily in the neighborhood of where the deal is likely to land.

All the alleged $300M bids for Yoshinobu Yamamoto — that’s inaccurate, sources tell ESPN. Teams have been asked not to discuss terms yet. But that could change today when bidding, sources said, is expected to begin. Now is when Yamamoto’s free agency gets real.”
