Red Sox Could Be Facing Potential Loss Of Marcelo Mayer Due To Wrist Injury

He’s been amazing to behold this season, being the type of player that can always be counted upon. He’s been succinctly described by Gordo as being able to “play anywhere in the infield, with or without prep and reps. Dude’s always ready. What a defender.” So obviously losing a player like that would be damaging to any team. Yet the Red Sox could be facing the potential loss of Marcelo Mayer due to a wrist injury.

As reported by Eric Cole, up until recently, Mayer’s wrist injury was seen as more of a minor annoyance than anything else. However, it appears the sprained wrist could be a more serious situation than initially expected. Per mlb.com injury report, “Mayer (right wrist sprain) had an injection on his ailing wrist, and the Red Sox should have an idea by Aug. 5 or so if it helped. If not, there’s a chance Mayer misses the rest of the season.”

There is never a good time to lose a player for the season. But this loss could be especially brutal for the Red Sox as they had been on a roll. Becoming one of the hottest teams in baseball over the past month. And holding one of the league’s best records since the start of July. They even overtook the New York Yankees for second place in the AL East and are just three games back of the Toronto Blue Jays.

If Mayer has to have season-ending wrist surgery that could definitely put a damper on the Red Sox’ momentum. In addition, the season ended for pitcher Tanner Houck this past Saturday. “Tanner’s going to have Tommy John surgery,” said Alex Cora in his pregame press conference. “He went to see Dr. Meister there in Texas and that was the recommendation.”

Mayer was the No. 4 overall pick back in 2021 and when he signed with the Red Sox garnered a signing bonus of $6.6 million along with signing a one-year, $760,000 contract with the team for the 2025 season. He was officially called up on May 24 and has been quite effective both as an infielder and in the batters box as he still tries to develop and adjust to the MLB level.

Mayer had brought a level of excitement to the Boston fans since the Rafael Devers trade. So that will be missed. However, the team is still loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. And it isn’t yet known if the surgery will be required. So at this point we’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
