Rays Home Run Streak -On the Verge of Breaking More Records!
Tampa Bay just can’t seem to stay away or out of the history books this 2023 season. They kick things off with a historic 13-game winning streak effortlessly tying a mark set by the 1982 Atlanta Braves and 1987 Milwaukee Brewers. While watching this talented team accomplish such a feat was exciting enough; Tampa is at it again; this time when it comes to going YARD. The Rays home run streak is currently on the brink of hitting (no pun intended) new levels of greatness!
Currently, the Rays extend their home run streak to a mind-blowing 19 games. This is now the second longest home run streak (to begin a season); in baseball history. The only team to go for longer are the 2019 Mariners’ who hit a home run in each of their first 20 games that season.
Can the Tampa Bay Rays get it done? By now, all of the sports world should just be shaking their heads with a collective ‘yes.’ The Rays keep showing that they are the real deal and are ready for battle.
What is spurring such determination and a legendary legacy? Tampa Bay’s hitting coach, Chad Mottola, mentions that the team took last postseason’s loss to Cleveland pretty hard. The Rays were swept out the postseason as fast as they entered it.
During their face off with Cleveland; the offense and strong bats just were not there. And to loosely quote the great MJ, “They took that personally.” From that moment on, it is out with the old and in with a new mindset as well as work ethic. The Rays recognize a need to change and go for it.
Therefore, how are the Rays doing now? Mottola says the fire is only growing stronger each day. He states, “It stuck with them the whole offseason [the loss during the Wild Card series]. They continue to put the work in, day-in, day-out, and it’s pretty contagious right now.”

That contagious spirit is permeating the whole lineup. There is plenty of depth this season. When one guy is slightly off, another guy is crushing balls like he’s Thanos with the power stone.
Therefore, what is the key? What are the Rays doing to obliterate all competition? Simple: stick to the plan, always bring the A-game and pump each other up. Basically, work as a team. Maybe that is over simplifying things, but the Rays’ players do not think so at all.
Brandon Lowe says, “Hitting is extremely contagious, and it feels like when one guy gets going, the next guy just wants to hop on the train and keep it rolling. It’s just that kind of thing. It turns into a little bit of a feeding frenzy.”
Also, Yandy Diaz remarks, “When things are going well, you really don’t have to do too much. Just stick with the work and the routine, and that’s what we do.”
The Rays are making it look easy this season and it’s exhilarating to see their winning approach in action. It’s a formula that is working well, seeing that they are leading the standings at 16-3. Moreover, Tampa Bay is just 2 home runs shy from accumulating more “streak” glory; and they seem poised, ready with bats blazing to continue to knock it out the park and straight into the record books.
