Ravens Battle With Chiefs To Kick Off Season
The 105th NFL season kicked off in fine fashion in Kansas City. Well actually there was a delay due to heavy rains and nearby lightning. Therefore the Ravens battle with the Chiefs to kick off the season was pushed to 8:40 p.m. ET. But before we get into the game here are a few interesting tidbits related to the game.
Running back Derrick Henry weighs more than most of the Kansas City linebackers. Henry weighs 247 lbs while the linebackers average weight is 237 lbs. He’s a big man. The officials immediately let it be known that they would be calling offensive illegal formation penalties. They hit the Ravens with three of them in the first quarter.
And staying on the Ravens they have a new decal on the back of their helmets. On the decal, the “Joe D.” stands for Joe D’Alessandris, while “Jacoby 12” remembers Jacoby Jones. Both passed away during this off season.
In the first half both teams scored touchdowns on their opening drives and then punted on their second drives. It felt like the teams were evenly matched. However, Chris Jones of the Chiefs was frequently in the back field disrupting Lamar Jackson. On the other hand, the Ravens defense had some trouble containing Isaiah Pacheco and Xavier Worthy. Both had a very productive night.
Both quarterbacks committed turnovers in the second quarter. Jackson was sacked, fumbled the ball and Kansas City recovered it and had to settle for a field goal. Mahomes later threw an interception and the Ravens also capitalized with a field goal. At halftime the Chiefs led 13-10.

In the second half the Ravens got their running game going and had success moving the ball down the field. Chris Jones’ pass rush was not quite as relentless giving Jackson some room to work. However, either his passes were overthrown or the receivers were not running the right route.
Either way the Ravens pulled within a touchdown. With four seconds left on the game clock, Jackson heaved a pass to the end zone. Isaiah Likely caught what looked like a toe-tap touchdown.
However, after official review the touchdown call was overturned and the Chiefs won the game 27-20. The Chiefs are the Chiefs and they’ll be fine. But if the Ravens offensive line can gel a little more they are going to be a dangerous team.
