Raiders Quarterback Situation Iffy But Rookie Tight End Is Great

It’s been a rollercoaster ride for the team where their quarterback position is concerned. Resulting in poor offensive showings in numerous games. Although the Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback situation is iffy their rookie tight end is great. In fact he set a new NFL rookie tight end record for most receptions. But before we get to that we just want to talk about the quarterback issues for the Raiders.

Gardner Minshew was placed on injured reserve last month after suffering a broken collarbone. Aidan O’Connell had been on injured reserve but came off in time to take Minshew’s place. However, in yesterday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, O’Connell suffered a knee injury. After the game coach Pierce just said, “It didn’t look good.” But today, Adam Schefter posted: “Tests on QB Aidan O’Connell’s knee today revealed a bone bruise and he would like to try to play Monday night vs. the Falcons, per source.” If O’Connell is not able to play then Desmond Ridder will step into the role.

Ridder, who was signed to the practice squad earlier this season, and who has been the backup because of the injuries, took over for O’Connell on Sunday. Ridder is a former Falcon so if he plays against them next Monday it could be a revenge game for him. He started started 17 games games for the Falcons in 2022-23 after being a third-round pick in 2022. He was traded to the Arizona Cardinals this year and was cut in their training camp.

Moving on to some good news, Brock Bowers had a 12-yard catch in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s matchup against the Buccaneers. With the catch Bowers surpassed Sam LaPorta (86) for most catches by a rookie tight end in NFL history. Coming into Week 14, Bowers led the league in receptions (84) and was Offensive Rookie of the Month for November. During that month he recorded 32 receptions for 349 yards (10.9 avg.) and three touchdowns in four games played. He is just the third tight end since 1996 to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month. And the first since 2005 (Heath Miller).

With the pace he’s on it’s possible the tight end could break the NFL record for most receptions by a rookie. Which was set by the Rams’ Puka Nacua last season (106 receptions).
