Raiders’ House Cleaning Continued; Relieved GM Of His Duties
On Tuesday it was the termination of former head coach Antonio Pierce. Many wondered why the general manager wasn’t also let go. However, it appears that just more time was needed. Today the Raiders’ house cleaning continued; they relieved GM Tom Telesco of his duties. The team isn’t big on making grand, descriptive statements when they terminate a staff member. You can read their complete, unadorned statement below:
“The Las Vegas Raiders have relieved Tom Telesco of his duties as General Manager. We appreciate his efforts in helping build a foundation for the future. We wish Tom and his family all the best.”
That’s it, short and to the point. Perhaps the brevity of the statement is due to the fact that Telesco was only with the team for less than a year. With Telesco’s removal, the Raiders will be looking for a new coach and general manager for the third time in three years. Not the best way to build a successful, winning franchise. According to reports, the Raiders have requested to talk to Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn, Todd Monken, Steve Spagnuolo and Robert Saleh.
It’s expected that minority owner Tom Brady will be heavily involved all Raiders’ big decisions. Therefore, with Brady’s influence upon the organization you wonder how much power the new GM will have. However, along with power, Brady will have pressure in a position in which he has no experience. If the GM and head coach don’t work, he will have to face the music along with Davis. And speaking of Brady, there were reports that he reached out to Bill Belichick. However, Belichick says he is staying with UNC.
Raiders’ House Cleaning Continued; Relieved GM Of His Duties
Telesco had been fired by the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2023 season. He had spent the previous 11 years there as their general manager. Chargers fans weren’t sorry to see him go as they had been calling for his termination for awhile. But he’ll have to pull up stakes again and find a new home.
In the meantime, the Raiders have had just two winning seasons and two postseason appearances since losing Super Bowl XXXVII following the 2002 season. Since 2012, they’ve had three different general managers and seven different head coaches, counting those who held the title on an interim basis. That’s a lot of changes for any organization so they will really need to nail their next head coach and general manager selections.
