Raiders Expected To Hire John Spytek As General Manager
This was a team that had fired their head coach and kept their general manager. Only to terminate the general manager a couple of days later. The Jacksonville Jaguars was one of those teams that had fired their head coach and general manager at separate times too. However, according to reports the Las Vegas Raiders are expected to hire John Spytek as their general manager. Spytek will replace Tom Telesco who had only been with the team for just under a year.
Spytek was entering his second year as assistant general manager with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Prior to that Spytek spent two seasons as the Vice President of Player Personnel. Overall he was with the Buccaneers for nine years having joined the team in 2016. As director of player personnel he helped to get former quarterback Tom Brady signed to the team in 2020. But he has had a 21 year career in the NFL with stops in Denver, Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
“A new leader in Las Vegas: Raiders are finalizing a deal to hire Buccaneers assistant GM John Spytek as their new general manager, per sources. John Spytek and Tom Brady both played at Michigan in 1999, then were together in Tampa when Brady led the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title. Now they join forces again in Las Vegas. John Spytek has worked with a number of top-level executives and coaches, including Jason Licht, John Elway, Andy Reid, Mike Holmgren, Tom Heckert, John Harbaugh and Gary Kubiak.”
There hasn’t been an official announcement from the team as yet. However, it would appear that Brady had some input in selecting Spytek for the general manager role. He can now be reunited with his former University of Michigan teammate.

With Spytek on board he can now work on selecting a new head coach for the team. Owner Mark Davis said he anticipated Brady helping in a QB selection as well as helping to train that QB. That’s not something to be taken lightly but ESPN’s Booger McFarland had praise for Spytek:
“Earned, can’t wait to see what he does. One of the finest eyes of talent I’ve ever talked to. Now comes the biggest decisions of his career. Coach and quarterback.”
Outside of work, Spytek is a husband and father. Their first child, Evelyn, died aged 21 months as a result of cytomegalovirus (CMV). Their loss led to him and his wife later founding the National CMV Foundation to raise awareness of the disease.
Sounds like the Raiders found a good guy for the job.
