Rafael Devers Headed To San Francisco As Boston Red Sox Trade With Giants

There was tension from the start of training camp about the position he would play. With the acquisition of Alex Bergman, third base became a hot button issue. But after settling on agreeing to be the DH it was thought that matters were settled. Well today Rafael Devers is headed to San Francisco as the Boston Red Sox made a trade with the Giants. Both teams were able to fill their needs with the transaction.

On x.com (formerly twitter) the team posted the following announcement:

“The #RedSox today traded 3B/DH Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, in exchange for LHP Kyle Harrison, RHP Jordan Hicks, minor league OF James Tibbs III, and minor league RHP Jose Bello. Harrison has been optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the club designated LHP Zach Penrod for assignment.”

Naturally many Red Sox fans are upset about the trade feeling as though the team has gotten rid of their best players. There was the trade of Mookie Betts to the Dodgers in 2020 and Xander Bogaerts signing with the Padres two years later. Now taking away one of the sport’s most productive hitters will hurt the Red Sox lineup in the short term. As one fan put it: “Trading our star player only on the 2nd year of a 10 year contract is ins@ne.” And speaking of contracts, the Giants will cover the remainder of Devers’ contract, which runs through 2033 and will pay him more than $250 million, sources told ESPN. That’s one expensive

This trade was also unusual due to the timing and the stature of Devers. Trading major league players for other MLB regulars doesn’t often happen in June. The July 31 trade deadline is too far away and most teams aren’t sure if they are in the buying or selling market. Also, both teams consider themselves contenders so why would they do a deal at all? The Giants are keeping pace with the Dodgers and Padres. While the Red Sox are just a half-game out of the AL wild-card spot.

However, for the Giants, picking up Devers will be a real asset to their offense. They could definitely use a power hitter like Devers to give them a boost in the NL West. Despite the hastiness of the trade, manager Bob Melvin was pleased with the transaction saying:

“Yeah, it was a lot, and it was late, but you know what? This is something we really needed,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said.

“To get a guy like Devers … there’s a lot you have to give up for him, but this fits us perfectly. It’s a power left-handed bat, a guy that can go the other way and hit for power in our ballpark. I mean, it’s tailor-made for us, so kudos to the front office to swing this.”

This looks like it was certainly a great trade for the Giants but the jury may still be out for the Red Sox. However, they did get pitching which they needed, so the trade may be good business all around.
