Rachel Robinson Watched on Proudly as Jackie Robinson Museum Inspired New Generation
The Jackie Robinson museum’s mission is clear: To educate visitors about Jackie Robinson, the athlete, activist, patriot, entrepreneur and family man in historical context; while challenging people of all ages to practice empathy and pursue a life of achievement and purpose. And this year for Jackie Robinson Day, Ms. Robinson desired for everyone, especially, young children to come learn about the life, achievements as well as enduring legacy of her dear husband. And wonderfully, she got her wish. Yes, on Tuesday Rachel Robinson watched on proudly as the Jackie Robinson Museum inspired a new generation.
Rachel Robinson is now 102 years old. She has seen a lot, been through a lot; but still very resilient in her ways. Despite her age she is not slowing down in ensuring that Jackie’s many accomplishments is never erased or forgotten.
Ms. Robinson along with the foundation she created for her late husband opened the Jackie Robinson Museum in Lower Manhattan back in 2022. Since then, many have taken the opportunity to visit the amazing museum. What can visitors expect to experience? The museum reveals,
TRIBUTE TO AN AMERICAN ICON:
The JACKIE ROBINSON MUSEUM celebrates the enduring legacy of one of the most important Americans of the 20th century, chronicling his trailblazing achievements against the backdrop of United States history. Invoking Robinson’s role as a champion for racial, social, and economic equality, the Museum’s programming places an emphasis on dialogue around critical issues that continue to challenge our society.
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play Major League Baseball in the modern era and achieved Hall of Fame status. He later became the first African American to hold an officer-level position at a major corporation, served as an advisor to top politicians, actively promoted economic empowerment by co-founding a bank and a housing development company, and of course was a key figure in advancing equal justice and first-class citizenship from the 1950s until his death in 1972. Hailed a ‘…freedom rider before freedom rides,’ Robinson’s name has become synonymous with breaking barriers.”

Major League Baseball was on hand at Jackie’s museum to take in all of the proceedings on the day celebrated on which Robinson broke the color barrier. The league took time to interview Della Britton, longtime president and CEO of the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Regarding Rachel’s visit this week, Britton mentions,
“We got a very strong directive from Rachel Robinson to make sure that we brought young people in. She wanted them very much to know the history. She wanted them to know how much her husband was in support of opportunities for everyone, regardless of whence they came.
So yes, we wanted to appeal to all ages — clearly we have an adult population that comes in with the historical background of Jackie Robinson’s story … but young people have been a real focus these three years.”
Yes, if you build it they will come. And on Tuesday children flooded the museum scene. Several kids happily explored the main gallery, which features a wall-to-wall timeline of Jackie’s career highlights and floor-to-ceiling pillars dedicated to his life beyond baseball — including Jackie the Soldier, Jackie the Activist and Jackie the Entrepreneur.

A group of the young people in attendance were from several NYC/NJ Nike RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) programs. These young ones and their families were invited to spend the day learning all about Jackie’s legacy. And a time was had.

The museum is closed Monday through Wednesday. Yet, open from 11AM-6PM Thursday through Sunday. Remember tickets can be purchased online, but walk-ins are also welcome.
