Quick Thoughts About Week 10 NFL Sunday Action
It was the last of the International games which was held in Munich Germany featuring the New York Giants versus the Tennessee Titans. Drake Maye and Caleb Williams battled but only one of the rookies could prevail. Kansas City scraped by with another win thanks to a botched field goal. Let’s jump right in with some quick thoughts about the Week 10 NFL Sunday action.
Giants @ Panthers – It was the last international game and it was quite competitive. Panthers QB Bryce Young was confidently connecting with his rookie receivers in the first half. And newly extended running back Chuba Hubbard proved he was worth every penny. Whereas QB Daniel Jones was missing wide open receivers, he was sacked and threw an interception. But they were better in the second half tying the game forcing overtime. Giants’ running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. had a productive game. However, the Giants got the ball first in overtime and on the first play Tracy had the ball punched out of his hands. The Panthers recovered and went on to kick a 36-yard field goal winning the game 17-20.
Patriots @ Bears – Caleb Williams was holding onto the ball for too long and was sacked nine times. Although the Patriots took an early 3-0 lead, Drake Maye was intercepted on their next drive. But in the second quarter he led a drive with a nice mix of passes and runs and scored their first touchdown. They were up 13-3 at the half. The third quarter was nothing but punts and no scores. Both the Patriots’ run game and defense made appearances today which helped them to post their third win of the season. Williams had four offensive linemen who were ruled out but the Bears offense is not working right now.
Quick Thoughts About Week 10 NFL Sunday Action
Bills @ Colts – It was a rough start for the Colts. After the Bills punted on their opening drive, QB Joe Flacco took the field and was immediately intercepted for a pick-6. After the kickoff, Flacco had the Colts moving down the field but was intercepted again at the Buffalo 37-yard line. The Colts turned it into a 29-yard field goal. Running back Jonathan Taylor was a bright spot for the Colts with a 58-yard run resulting in a 27-yard field goal. The Colts defense kept pressure on the Bills offense but their offense stalled. They tried to mount a comeback scoring a touchdown with just two seconds remaining on the clock. It was too late and the Bills won 30-20.
Vikings @ Jaguars – It was a low-scoring affair that included the Vikings throwing an interception in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters. And the Jaguars matched that turnover energy with a fumble and two interceptions in the 4th quarter. The Jaguars were without QB Trevor Lawrence who is dealing with an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. His replacement, former Patriot Mac Jones, led the Jaguars to an early 7-3 scoring on a quarterback sneak. And kept that lead going into the half. But despite the Jaguars’ defense playing well, the offense couldn’t capitalize on the turnovers they created. The Vikings took the lead scoring two field goals. And Mac Jones ended the game with an interception so the Vikings held on to the 12-7 victory.
Notes on Some of the Early Games
Broncos @ Chiefs – The Broncos played well but it wasn’t enough. In fact the Chiefs trailed the whole game until the fourth quarter. Broncos fans are in an uproar over the officiating of the game. Particularly in the second quarter when the Broncos had sacked Patrick Mahomes forcing a fourth down. But the officials called a questionable illegal contact down field penalty. The penalty resulted in a first down and the Chiefs went on to score a touchdown. But at any rate the Broncos had a chance to increase their lead but penalties and incomplete passes derailed them. The Chiefs took the lead with two field goals. The Broncos got into field goal range and ran the clock down to one second. They attempted a 35-yard field goal which was blocked losing the game 14-16. The Chiefs are 9-0.
Falcons @ Saints – The Falcons have not turned a 6-3 record into 7-3 since 1980. So it’s not surprising that their fans were saying they were the same ol’ Falcons. It was a game they should have won considering the Saints had fired their head coach earlier this week. QB Derek Carr was just coming back from an oblique injury. Whereas the Falcons were mostly healthy and were undefeated in the NFC South. But the Falcons were derailed by penalties, not converting third downs and missing field goals. It was just one of those games when they had plenty of chances to win and didn’t. The Saints had nothing to lose and played like it and so they won 17-20.
More Thoughts On the Early Games
49ers @ Buccaneers – It was running back Christian McCaffrey’s debut and tight end George Kittle was happy to have him back. But even with CMC’s “elite aura” the 49ers just managed to squeak past the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They missed three field goals but held on to win in the end. Part of their success was due to several explosive plays. The 49ers amassed gains of 30, 46, 30, 32 and 33 to five different players. The Buccaneers defense did a good job sacking Brock Purdy and not letting the 49ers run away with the game. But kicker Jake Moody came through when it mattered the most with a 44-yard field goal to win the game 23-20.
Steelers @ Commanders – The Steelers traded for Mike Williams this week and it paid off. While Geroge Pickens had another amazing catch. Whereas it was a tough ride for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Steelers’ defense sacked him three times, hit him six times and recorded eight tackles for a loss. They improved to 26-6 under head coach Mike Tomlin against rookie quarterbacks. And also have now won their past eight games coming out of a bye week. The Commanders took the lead in the third quarter but couldn’t capitalize on a Steelers’ fourth quarter fumble. Then with less than six minutes in the game and good field position Russell Wilson led a touchdown drive. The drive ended with Williams scoring a 32-yard touchdown to take the lead. Washington got as far as the 50 yard line before failing to convert on fourth down. The Steelers picked up a first down and ran out the clock winning the game 28-27.
Late Afternoon Game Notes
Titans @ Chargers – Titans’ QB Will Levis made his return and was sacked six times in the game. Calvin Ridley scored a 42-yard touchdown catch but the Titans’ offense was inconsistent. Their defense allowed back-to-back touchdowns to open the second half. The Chargers took a 27-10 lead in the fourth quarter. Chargers’ QB Justin Herbert scored touchdowns both passing and rushing. Whereas the Titans offense was lackluster losing their early lead. They finally played with some urgency at the end of the game scoring a touchdown. But it was garbage-time as the Chargers won the game 17-27.
Jets @ Cardinals – The Cardinals scored on every possession they had in the first half. The Jets were moving the ball but couldn’t finish drives. Aaron Rodgers summed up the game, “”They played really good on defense and we didn’t sustain. We didn’t score 7s in the red zone. I missed a couple throws for sure, and situationally, we were just really bad.” Kyler Murray was exceptional and led his team to a decisive 31-6 victory.
Eagles @ Cowboys – Jalen Hurts was pressured, hurried and sacked all through the first half. But he used his legs to pick up some first downs. Despite being sacked five times he led his team on two scoring drives in the first half. But both teams were sloppy in the first half committing turnovers. Eagles RB Saquon Barkley was quiet most of the game. However, his running set up a drive that ended with Hurts running running for a five yard touchdown. With Dak Prescott out Cooper Rush took his place. He couldn’t get on the same page with his receivers. He was replaced late in the third quarter with Trey Lance but the change didn’t help. The Eagles went on to win in a blowout 34-6.
Notes On Sunday Night Football Game
Lions @ Texans – The Texans dominated the first quarter of the game. Jared Goff had an uncharacteristic pass that he just threw into the ground. Another pass was batted down and caught by the Texans before it hit the ground. The Texans converted the turnover into a touchdown. And then they scored a field goal. At the start of the second quarter, Jared Goff and his offense looked more like what we’re used to seeing. They efficiently went down the field and scored a touchdown. But the Texans defense cracked down on them again causing them to go three and out three times. They intercepted Goff twice, one led to a field goal and one was thrown at the end of the half.
The third quarter featured a lot of hard hitting defense and turnovers. However, the Lions did put up two field goals. And with some hard running from David Montgomery they moved down the field and scored a touchdown on their first fourth quarter possession. In a bizarre play, offensive tackle Tytus Howard appeared to block C.J. Stroud and pulled the ball from his hands. It caused a fumble which Howard recovered but the Texans had to punt. Things continued to deteriorate for the Texans. The dynamic start in the first half faded away and the Texans couldn’t score in the second half. And the Lions took full advantage clawing their way back into the game. With four seconds left in the game, the Lions kicked the winning field goal.
Final Thoughts On NFL Week 10
The Texans suffered a loss to the Jets last week and now the Lions this week. Something is lacking on the offensive side of the ball. They are missing key players such as Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs, and defensive player Will Anderson. But even so, they have to get their offense back on track. But the same can be said of the Jets, Cowboys, and Titans. Teams making improvements are the Panthers, Patriots and Cardinals.
Teams on a bye this week: Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks
