QB Kirk Cousins And DE Haason Reddick Not Seen At OTAs Today

It’s no secret that veteran NFL players are not usually fans of voluntary workouts with the team. Organized Team Activities or OTAs give players a chance to work on their skills while building team chemistry. However, some players prefer to workout on their own or with a group of players of their choosing. Oftentimes players who are recovering from injuries or in contract disputes sit them out. So, it’s interesting that QB Kirk Cousins of the Falcons and DE Haason Reddick of the Buccaneers were not seen at OTAs today.

Cousins started the 2024 season with a bang, looking and playing well. But then the wheels came off and everything started to fall apart. The team went on a losing streak and near the end of the season the team benched Cousins in favor of their 2024 1st-round draft pick Michael Penix. They cited the need for better quarterback play as the reason for the change. This year the Falcons are all in on Penix, therefore Cousins requested to be released. However, ESPN reporter Marc Raimondi explained the team’s point of view writing:

“The Falcons have not budged on their message from the end of last season. They are comfortable with Cousins as Penix’s backup, because they’d be paying Cousins his guaranteed $27.5 million in 2025 even if he were released.”

So, although Cousins is not in a contract dispute, he does want the opportunity to play elsewhere. Hence that may be why he didn’t show up for OTA’s today. Since Cousins won’t be subject to any discipline for being absent there’s no issue for him not showing up.

As for Haason Reddick, he’s been mired in controversy ever since his trade from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New York Jets. Reddick was looking for a new contract which the Eagles were not willing to give him, hence the trade to New York. However, he held out of training camp and into the regular season. After agreeing to an adjusted contract he ended his holdout in October 2024. Reddick received the remainder of his contract, approximately $9 million. Plus new incentives that allowed him to recoup the $12 million he lost in fines.

But despite the Jets saying their intention was to keep Reddick, he became a free agent in 2025. He then signed a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for $14 million. Now in a new twist, Reddick did not show up today for OTAs. Buccaneers’ head coach Todd Bowles said, “I’m sure one of these days we’ll see him.” I wouldn’t call that a ringing vote of confidence but it’s early days yet. As the offseason unfolds, we’ll see what Cousins and Reddick will do next.
