Prince Harry Graciously Accepted Pat Tillman Award At Espys

It was time again for the ESPN Awards or the Espys 2024. And last night Prince Harry graciously accepted the Pat Tillman Award at the event. However, when it was announced that Prince Harry would be given the award some people were unhappy about it. Specifically Pat Tillman’s mother Marie Tillman who openly criticized Harry for being chosen. She told the Daily Mail, ‘I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award. She further added, ‘There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans.

‘These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections or privilege that Prince Harry has. I feel that those types of individuals should be recognised.’ There are recipients that are far more fitting. There are individuals working in the veteran community that are doing tremendous things to assist veterans. These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections or privilege that Prince Harry has. I feel that those types of individuals should be recognised.”

Despite her feelings, Prince Harry is more than qualified to be honored. The Pat Tillman Award for Service is presented by ESPN each year to someone who has used their connection to the world of sports to positively impact the lives of others. As ESPN noted on their x.com page: “The Duke of Sussex founded The Invictus Games, an international platform that supports wounded, injured, and sick servicemen and women who are navigating both physical and invisible injuries.” And he is a combat veteran himself having served two terms in Afghanistan.

His acceptance speech was about five minutes long and is well worth watching. For many his speech was inspirational and unifying. He opened his speech by acknowledging the Tillman family:
“I’d like to begin by expressing my deepest gratitude to everyone at the Pat Tillman Foundation, led by Marie Tillman Shenton, who I’m so honored is here tonight. I’d also like to acknowledge the Tillman family, especially Mrs. Mary Tillman, Pat’s mother,” Harry said. “Her advocacy for Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and one that I respect.”
He concluded by mentioning the U.S. Army’s Rangers who live by the expression leave no one behind. And he had no doubt Pat Tillman and his comrades lived by those words. He then promised on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation that, “No matter the road ahead we are here for you, we will leave no one behind.”
