Potential No.1 Draft Pick Hopes To Play Offense And Defense
Playing on both the offense and defense used to be fairly common in the old days of both college and professional football. But of course in the modern era players generally play on one side of the ball or the other. However, a potential No. 1 draft pick hopes to play on offense and defense once he joins the NFL. For Travis Hunter this wouldn’t be anything new for him. In college, he played for the Jackson State Tigers and the Colorado Buffaloes as both cornerback and wide receiver. And he would like to do the same in the NFL as it’s something he has been doing for quite awhile. He was also a two-way player in high school at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, GA.
Clearly he was very good at both positions as he is the only college football player in history to win the Chuck Bednarik and Fred Biletnikoff Awards. And of course he capped off his college career by winning the 2024 Heisman trophy. He earned the trophy by playing virtually every snap on offense and defense for the Buffaloes most of the past two seasons. But with all those achievements would he really be able to play both positions at the NFL level? Some don’t think so, believing that he is aiming too high.
Although he wants to be a two-way player in the NFL he realizes the decision is not up to him. Hunter admits it’s “still up in the air” what his actual role will look like. He knows every team that could draft him might have different plans for how to deploy him. “I want to play 100 percent (on both sides),” Hunter added, “but it’s up to the organization.”

Whether he plays the wide receiver or cornerback position will be up to the team that drafts him. According to CBSSports.com teams have varying beliefs on how to use the multi-talented Hunter. “The Titans, for example, see Hunter playing cornerback while getting occasional reps at wideout, while the Browns consider Hunter a receiver. The Patriots feel that there’s a scenario where Hunter could play both positions.”
Before anything can be decided he’ll have to be drafted first and right now he is expected to be a top 5 pick. But to Hunter it’s important to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. “It’s super important to go No. 1,” he said. “My dream was to go No. 1 and be the best I can be.”
Hunter will not work out at the NFL Scouting Combine this week. Instead, he will do drills at cornerback and wide receiver during Big 12 Pro Day, which will take place March 18-21.
