Potential Draft Pick AJ Simon Passes One Week Before NFL Draft
The pro football draft is a life changing opportunity and event for many hopefuls. Many players work just about their entire lives in order to reach such a pinnacle and milestone. Unfortunately, one young man will not get the chance to hear his named called; celebrate with family as well as friends; and and embark upon a career in the national football league. This morning the University at Albany sadly announced that potential draft pick AJ Simon has passed just one week before the NFL Draft.
Simon was just 25 years old. A defensive juggernaut and a powerful athlete. AJ played as a defensive end; and had 12½ of his team’s FCS-leading 50 sacks in the 2023 season.
UAlbany released a statement about Simon’s sudden passing; mourning his tremendous loss, and nicely remembering his contributions as a player. They state,
“The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral “AJ” Simon this morning.
AJ was a tremendous young man and even better teammate throughout his time at UAlbany. He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years.
He will be profoundly missed.”

Many have come forward online to pay their respects for Simon. Including Head Coach, Greg Gattuso. Regarding his experience and time with AJ, Gattuso mentions,
“Two joyous years coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon. My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.”
Very nice sentiments coach. AJ will surely be missed by so many; on and off the field. He is an athlete that brought so much passion to the game; while brightening up the lives of others. As Dane Brugler of The Athletic also notes,
Absolutely tragic: Albany pass rusher AJ Simon, who was considered a potential draft pick, has passed away. Simon was a fun player to study and the coaches raved about him on and off the field. Thoughts and prayers to his family.
The cause of death surrounding Simon is currently unknown. Rumors are mounting. However, none have been officially confirmed. What is true is that this is a tragedy.
A young life and person gone too soon. He leaves a legacy and name to be proud of; and his future was certainly bright. Nonetheless, our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time, and with those that knew him best.
