Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo 2026 WNBA Expansion Draft Recap
On Friday afternoon, the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo selected their inaugural rosters. Right off the bat some familiar names came to the fore, such as dynamic shooters, Bridget Carleton and Marina Mabrey. Carleton was selected first by the Fire, while Mabrey was quickly scooped up and collected by the Tempo. Nevertheless, if you missed any of the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo 2026 WNBA Expansion Draft action; no worries we have a condensed overview and recap for you.
A few other notes include Carla Leite of the Golden State Valkyries; now going to Portland. Leite is among the players who helped make WNBA history in the Bay Area. Being a part of the first expansion team to EVER make the playoffs in a team’s inaugural season. No doubt Leite can now take this experience with her to the Fire; helping that expansion franchise to get off the ground and off to a good start as well.
Lastly, Nika Muhl will be a member of the Fire as well. Muhl is a very solid player but is once again dealing with injury (ACL). She will miss the 2026 season; however, Portland is obviously willing to roll the dice here. If Muhl returns back in good form they will have a real threat in their roster arsenal.
How the WNBA Expansion Draft Works
Nevertheless, let’s get to the overall results of Friday’s draft. But in case you’re wondering how players were selected. QUICK FACTS: An Expansion Draft is a process used by professional sports leagues to allow a new team to build its roster by selecting players from existing teams. In this case, the WNBA’s 14th and 15th franchises, the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire, which will debut in the 2026 season, were able to select a player from a designated pool of unprotected players from each of the current 13 WNBA teams.
And both of these two new franchises, along with the rest of the league; will be able to keep building their roster with the upcoming draft. Yes, now that the Expansion Draft has concluded, both expansion teams will participate in the typical team roster-building functions, including the free agency period, and the 2026 WNBA Draft Presented by State Street Investment Management SPY, which will take place on Monday, April 13, 2026.
But enough about how the drafts work and function. Below you will find all of the Fire and Tempo’s picks.
