Pittsburgh Steelers Verbally Agreed To Contract With Mike McCarthy To Be Their Head Coach
The head coaching carousel continues to turn as another NFL team makes an important employee decision. A Pittsburgh native is coming home to do what he has done best for years. The Pittsburgh Steelers have verbally agreed to a contract with Mike McCarthy to be their head coach. McCarthy will replace Mike Tomlin who stepped down after 19 years as the Steelers head coach. He will be the fourth head coach in the history of the franchise. Chuck Knox was the first one from 1969-1991, Bill Cowher 1992-2006 and Tomlin 2007-2025. Hiring McCarthy shrinks the open head coach positions from 10 to 4.
McCarthy is 62-years old which is practically ancient compared to how young Cowher and Tomlin were when they got the nod. However, McCarthy comes to them with a plethora of experience. In 1981 he worked as a graduate assistant at Pitt in the late 80’s. He spent 18 years as an NFL head coach. 13 of those years were spent with the Green Bay Packers during which time they beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. From there he went to the Dallas Cowboys and spent five years as their head coach. He spent 2025 out of football, taking the year off from coaching.
McCarthy also has other connections to the Steelers besides being from the city. In 2000, McCarthy and the Steelers’ current general manager Omar Khan worked together in New Orleans. Now they will have the opportunity to work together again. And then there is veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Mike Tomlin had already let it be known that he wanted Rodgers to come back next season. Despite Rodgers saying the 2025 season was going to be his last. McCarthy helped to develop Rodgers while he was in Green Bay. He did the same for Dak Prescott in Dallas. It’s being said that McCarthy wasn’t hired to help lure Rodgers back. But it certainly couldn’t hurt to help persuade the quarterback to return for another season.

Overall McCarthy has a 174-112-2 regular season record and an 11-11 record in the postseason. He’s coached in the playoffs 12 times, including in eight straight years from 2009-16. When he was with the Dallas Cowboys, he had three 12-win seasons and led them to the playoffs three times in five seasons. He also worked as an offensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers for both franchises.
Some may not like the hiring of McCarthy, feeling that he is too old or just another retread. But of course it’s way to early to know if those assessments are accurate or way off the mark. So for now we will just wish a sincere congratulations and a welcome back to the league to Mike McCarthy!
