Pittsburgh Steelers Signed Head Coach Mike Tomlin To Extension
At one time he was the youngest head coach in the NFL to win a Super Bowl. Now entering into his 18th season the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed head coach Mike Tomlin to a three-year contract extension. So he’ll be with the team at least through the 2027 season. The Rooney family have always placed great emphasis on continuity at the head coach position. Since the days of Chuck Knoll, hired in 1969, Tomlin is just the third head coach preceded only by Bill Cowher.
Not all fans are happy with the extension. Last season there were many calling for Tomlin’s termination, displeased with the team’s standing at the end of each season. In 2023, they finished third in the division with a 10-7 record. In 2020, they finished 12-4 and won the division. The seasons in between were were both 9 wins, leaving fans dissatisfied with the results. However, the fact is that Tomlin has never had a losing season in 17 years. He holds the record for most consecutive non-losing seasons to begin a coaching career.
In addition, he has led the team to 11 playoff appearances, seven division titles, three AFC Championship games. And he’s had two Super Bowl appearances. Under his coaching the Steelers won Super Bowl XLIII but lost in Super Bowl XLV. However, he won as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII. With all of these accolades it’s not surprising that he received the extension.
A statement was issued by Steelers ownership. “Mike Tomlin’s leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” said Steelers President Art Rooney II. “Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success.”

So even if some fans don’t agree with the extension, Tomlin has the full support of ownership. And Tomlin expressed his gratitude for the support.
“I am appreciative for this contract extension and thankful for Art Rooney II for his support during my first 17 years in Pittsburgh,” said Tomlin. “We are continuing to work diligently to get back to where we belong – sustained playoff success with the ultimate goal of winning the franchise’s seventh Lombardi Trophy.
“I am very excited to get the 2024 season underway and provide our fans with a memorable year.”
Congrats to coach Tomlin. For his sake and the fans I hope the Steelers have a great season. Besides every team needs to step it up if they want to slow down the Kansas City Chiefs in the upcoming season.
