Pittsburgh Steelers Agreed To Terms With All-Pro Edge Rusher T.J. Watt
We all remember how we were waiting to see if Aaron Rodgers was going to sign with the Steelers. That eventually happened but apparently there was other drama going on behind the scenes. The team had been working for months to get a deal done with one of their top players. So after a long wait the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to terms with their All-Pro edge rusher T.J. Watt. Once again every quarterback’s nightmare has procured a great deal for himself.
The deal is so good that he is now the highest-paid, non-quarterback in the history of the NFL. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter has more information on the deal:
“ESPN sources: Steelers star TJ Watt has become the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history for the second time in his illustrious career, reaching agreement today on a three-year, $123 million extension that includes $108M fully guaranteed at signing. The $41 million per year average is the highest of any non-quarterback in NFL history. The deal has been in the works between CAA Sports and the Steelers front office for months.”
Watt’s extension will pay him an average of $41 million annually. His new deal eclipses those signed by other players of high caliber which includes:
TJ Watt: $41M
Ja’Marr Chase: $40.25M
Myles Garrett: $40M
Danielle Hunter: $35.6M
Maxx Crosby: $35.5M
Justin Jefferson: $35M
Nick Bosa: $34M
CeeDee Lamb: $34M
Watt was entering into the final year of the four-year, $112 million extension he had signed in 2022. He will remain with the team through the 2028 season with the new three-year extension. And his teammates are happy about that including defensive Captain Cameron Heyward who was ready to talk to general manager Oman Khan about Watt. “I’m going up to Omar and I’m telling him, ‘That’s not happening,'” Heyward said, “if there’s even a trade that gets up there. I don’t think it helps our team to trade a guy like that.”
Pittsburgh Steelers Agreed To Terms With All-Pro Edge Rusher T.J. Watt
In the past five seasons Watt has led the NFL with 73.5 sacks. He also is a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro. Playing for Pittsburgh, he has joined their long history of highly accomplished defensive players which is why he was the eighth player in franchise history to win Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. He led the league in sacks for three of his eight seasons, and he led in forced fumbles twice, including last season. Plus he tied the NFL record set by Michael Strahan for single sacks in a season with 22.5.
However, he did struggle during the latter part of the 2024 season. Having just two sacks and four quarterback hits in the Steelers’ season-ending five-game losing streak. But to rectify that he’s willing to move around. “I prefer the left, but at this point in my career I want to be an impact player,” he said in January. “I don’t want to be schemed out of games.”
No doubt, the overachiever will step up his game this coming season. In the meantime, congrats to T.J. on his massive new contract!
