Pittsburgh Pirates Paul Skenes Named National League Rookie of the Year
Even though no one is really surprised, congratulations are still very much in order. On Monday, Major League Baseball announced that Pittsburgh Pirates Paul Skenes was named the National League’s Rookie of the Year. Paul’s historic season has him picking up honors left and right. Or at least being nominated for them.
To refresh your memory or get you caught up. Some recent Skenes recognition includes:
- First Overall Draft Pick
- All-Star Game Starter
- NL Rookie of the Year
- NL Cy Young Finalist
- All-MLB First Team
In the above list, you no doubt noticed the All-Star mention. And Paul Skenes not only participated in the All-Star game, but he STARTED. Something that hadn’t been seen in baseball since the 90’s. Almost 30 years ago. To be exact, Skenes is the first rookie to start in the ASG since 1995. Speaking of the ASG, OptaStats revealed one more interesting tidbit. They state,
“In one year in the majors, the Pirates’ Paul Skenes has:
-started the All-Star Game
-won Rookie of the Year
-had a season with a sub-2.00 ERA & 10.00+ K/9No other pitcher in MLB history has done all 3 over his entire career (same season or not).”
As one can see, you can begin to see why Skenes is worthy of this award. He’s just getting started and already a historical sports figure. Moreover, ESPN’s Jeff Passan discussed this news online via his social media account on platform, X. He broke down an element all MLB fans love learning about yearly. How did the votes breakdown? Passan reveals,
“Pittsburgh right-hander Paul Skenes won National League Rookie of the Year, capturing 23 of 30 first-place votes and seven second-place votes. Jackson Merrill finished second with seven first-place votes and 23 in second. Jackson Chourio was third, Shota Imanaga fourth.”

While the ROTY award is still extremely flawed. Pitchers and everyday players should not be going up against each other. It is still an awesome accolade that helps put a legendary stamp on athletes that begin their career with a major bang right out the gates.
This years rookies definitely made waves. And Skenes, Merrill, Chourio and Imanaga all led the pack in the NL all season. We tip our caps to these rookies for all the amazing moments and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish in year two.
