A new era begins … the Pittsburgh Pirates are picking their primary pitching prospect to pitch Saturday….what a tongue twister! But yes, the rumors are true! The 2023 college world series champ with LSU, MLB 2023 first overall draft pick and MLB.com’s #3 rated prospect; Paul Skenes will make his major league debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday, May 11, 2024.
Skenes is the most highly touted pitching prospect in baseball since the Yankees Gerrit Cole; as well as the legend that is Stephen Strasburg. Two gentlemen who each had massive success in the big leagues.
Nevertheless, Paul’s pitching talents have had scouts in a chokehold, for years. He’s got a very nice selection and “menu” of pitches to dole out upon anyone stepping up to the plate. Starting with a 102 mph 4 seam fastball; and a slider that misses plenty of bats. Additionally, he’s also worked on adding a 2 seam fastball and a changeup to keep hitters guessing.
Even with all of this work to sharpen his insane skill-set even more. He’s made extremely fast progress. Which probably is why Pittsburgh feels confident that he is ready to face the Chicago Cubs this week.
Paul started in Triple A ball to build up his stamina; in order to start every 5 days in the Pirates starting rotation; instead of the once a week he was starting in college. He obliterated the competition in triple A. His 7 marvelous starts yielded a .99 ERA, .91 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in just over 27 innings. He looks more than ready to succeed at the MLB level.

The Pirates pitching staff is looking very solid. It is loaded with promising talent. Paul Skenes joins Jared Jones and veteran Mitch Keller to form an impressive top of the rotation. One that looks to signal that the Pirates are planning on positioning themselves as a perennial contender in the NL East.
As if things weren’t going well enough for Paul Skenes on the field, things are also going well for him off the field. Paul is a part of a major athlete couple duo. Reportedly he is dating and still going strong with the lovely Olivia Dunne, a member of the LSU gymnastics team that recently won the national championship. Olivia celebrated the great news of Paul’s MLB promotion to the big show on her tiktok.
