Pirates Sign Closer Aroldis Chapman- One Year Deal
Time is ticking down to spring training and guys are starting to get snatched up a bit more rapidly. In Pittsburgh they tacked on to their pitching roster. The Pirates sign closer Aroldis Chapman to an one year deal as long as the physical goes well.
MLB insider for FanSided, Robert Murray; breaks the story on Chapman. He briefly reveals,
“Free-agent reliever Aroldis Chapman in agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates, pending physical, according to sources familiar with the deal.”
Moreover, baseball and sports writer, Francys Romero confirms Murray’s intel and adds info on the financials. Romero says,
“Breaking: Cuban LHP Aroldis Chapman is on agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates, per sources. A massive contract for Aroldis Chapman and his agency Wasserman. $10.5 M for a 2024 season shortly after his 36th birthday, only talks about Chapman’s legacy in MLB.”
Lastly, USA Today Major League Baseball columnist, Bob Nightengale chimes in as well. Bob says,
“Pirates owner Bob Nutting promised that his team would be competitive this year, and the Pirates sign closer Aroldis Chapman to a one-year, $10.5 million deal. [By the way] Robert Murray on it.
All-Star closer David Bednar and Aroldis Chapman will be powerful 1-2 punch for the Pirates bullpen.
Chapman, 36 next month, went 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 15.9 K/9 rate with KC and TEX in 2023. He won his second WS ring.”

Codify Baseball, also reveals some nice analysis on Chapman’s game. Not familiar with Codify? Well, it’s a company trusted by numerous pitchers. Codify works with pitchers to improve their performance through analysis and communication that is carefully tailored to best fit each individual athlete. The founder of Codify, Michael Fisher, says his team utilizes a proprietary system that uses technology to produce tailored game-planning charts and heat maps (blue is good, red is bad).
Fisher talked to WGN, about how it all works and why pitchers love the information he can provide. Michael states,
“I was in the financial industry for a long time. I have a fascination with numbers.
Being able to quantify the chances that’s luck versus bad execution is huge. For a while, they’re like ‘oh, you’re just getting lucky.’ Or ‘maybe you shouldn’t throw that changeup as high or all that.’ We can lay that all out and quantify how high can you go safely against each guy. That’s amazing for a guy to be able to know he can throw a pitch into a three-foot square instead of a one-foot square.”

Sweet. So what about Chapman? Codify reveals,
“Lowest batting average allowed by any pitcher in history facing at least 1,500 batters during his MLB career:
Josh Hader, .156
Aroldis Chapman, .165
Craig Kimbrel, .166
Dellin Betances, .173
Kenley Jansen, .183
Billy Wagner, .187Fastest pitch in the last 13 years by a Red? A Yankee? A Cub? A Royal? A Ranger? All Aroldis Chapman!
Fastest pitch by a Pirate in the last 13 years is 102.7 MPH by Arquimedes Caminero but that mark is now in jeopardy!”
Not too shabby at all. Therefore, nice signing by the Pirates. However, will the Pirates keep the guy past the deadline or trade him?
We shall see. Nevertheless, can’t wait for the 2024 MLB season to start so we can watch the Pirates and the other 29 teams PLAY BALL.
