Pirates Paul Skenes Experiences His First Loss Against St Louis Cardinals
Pittsburgh’s rookie ace has been absolutely outstanding and unstoppable. Striking out batters with the confidence and precision of a longtime, hall of famer veteran. However, things went a little different today for the mound hurler. In a super tight game, the Pirates Paul Skenes experiences his first loss against the St Louis Cardinals.
Nevertheless, even with the loss, Skenes still showed just how talented he is and the possible legendary career he may have in the future. In a matchup against the Cards, Skenes was very dominant for several innings. Both teams actually prevented the other from scoring until midway or later in the game.
The Cardinals got their first run in the 5th inning. And would tack on another assurance run in the ninth. As for the Pirates, they would get their one and only run on the board in the eighth inning. But it is of note, that Paul did something today that he normally doesn’t do. Stay in to pitch the 8th.
Recently, Paul had a no hitter going and was pulled. The manager wanted to make sure Skenes did not overextend himself. Nevertheless, even being replaced the Pirates are able to hold on to win that game.
However, today a different decision is made. Skenes stays in; probably because the game was so close. Katie Woo, who covers the Pirates for The Athletic also discussed just how good Paul pitched during his appearance. Woo states,
[This is the] first time Paul Skenes has come out for the eighth inning in his career. He’s allowed two hits, one run, no walks, six K’s on a brisk 78 pitches. Despite the Arenado home run, St. Louis Cardinals have had virtually nothing going against him, yet lead 1-0.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan also had a few thoughts on Skenes outing. He says,
“Paul Skenes just finished the eighth inning with a 101-mph fastball on his 91st pitch. He has allowed two hits, hasn’t walked a batter and has struck out eight. And he is in line for his first loss, as a fifth-inning Nolan Arenado home run accounts for the only run in a 1-0 game.”
Well, the red bird Cardinals would end up winning 2-1. Thus ending Paul’s insane win streak. However, even with the loss it is clear that Skenes possesses immense talent that allows him to pitch SUPER late into games, week after week. Which is a real asset for the Pirates and shows why he is a guy who is definitely in the running for ROTY. Therefore, it will still be fun to watch Paul develop and play out the rest of the season.
