For this reason and more, the Pirates are signing top prospect Konnor Griffin to a nine-year $140 million contract. This deal shatters the record for largest contract before making an MLB debut.

Konnor was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft and is highly regarded as one of the best prospects baseball has seen in years. Playing in the minors last year, the 6-foot-3, 222-pound shortstop batted .333 with a .941 OPS. And he’s not even 20 yet; therefore, he can still add some more strength and pop behind that bat.

Furthermore, Griffin also impressed the Pittsburgh organization with his performance during spring training. Blasting not one, not two but four home runs out the park. Leading the Pirates to want to pull a Fernando Tatis Jr. situation and lock in Griffin early.

The two sides have been talking since early in spring training. Konnor Griffin is expected to be called up by the Pirates ahead of their home opener Friday. Therefore, Pittsburgh’s future star will make his official MLB debut against the Baltimore Orioles. Konnor is expected to become MLB’s first teenage position player since Juan Soto debuted in 2018.

Furthermore, Konnor Griffin is being called up soon enough to qualify the Pirates for a prospect promotion incentive pick if he wins Rookie of the Year or finishes in the top three in MVP voting before arbitration (likely Griffin’s first three seasons) because he will get a full season of MLB service if he stays up all of this season. The additional pick would be right after the first round.

ESPN’s trusted MLB insider, Jeff Passan confirmed all the above with an online post stating, “The Pittsburgh Pirates are calling up Konnor Griffin, the No. 1 prospect in baseball, ahead of Friday’s home opener. He’ll start at shortstop. And if he remains with the team the rest of the season, they’re eligible to receive a draft pick through the Prospect Promotion Incentive.”
