Phoenix Suns Hire Mike Budenholzer Agreeing to a Five Year $50 Million Plus Deal
Well that was beyond quick. Just hours ago the Suns had a different coach, with a different name. Nonetheless, after experiencing a very disappointing finish to their season, Phoenix decided to part ways with head coach Frank Vogel after being swept by the Timberwolves. Now they are moving on to a man that they believe will shake things up and get them on the road to glory. The Phoenix Suns Hire Mike Budenholzer agreeing to a five year $50 million plus deal.
Yes, the breakup pain is already over. And the Suns have already found a new partner. Yesterday, the rumor mill was swirling with tons of speculation that Phoenix really wanted Budenholzer to come take their head coach job.
Well, it looks like both parties actually wanted to come together. Since less than 24 hours after the announcement of the firing of Vogel; there is now confirmation of a new hiring. Phoenix seems zeroed in on the fact that Mike has won it all before as a coach; helping to bring home a championship with Milwaukee.
However, this won’t be just a walk in the park. There are also some challenges to get through. But, this is nothing Budenholzer hasn’t been through before. As CBS sports mentions,
“Budenholzer has coached the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks in the past, and won a championship for Milwaukee during the 2020-21 season. The Suns have now hired their third head coach in three years under new owner Mat Ishbia, who inherited Monty Williams as his team’s leader when he took over the team in February of 2023.
[Moreover] Budenholzer will take over a Suns team that looks nothing like his previous rosters. In Atlanta, he led a ragtag group of role players to 60 wins because they fit well together and played team-first offense. Now he has three stars with very similar skill sets. In Milwaukee, his offense was based around Giannis Antetokounmpo’s ability to get to the basket and all of the 3-pointers that created. His Suns roster was among the most mid-range heavy shooting teams in the NBA last season, and those are shots Budenholzer teams rarely take.”

Interesting. Nevertheless, lead NBA insider for The Athletic, Shams Charania; is among the first to break the news of the Suns hiring. Additionally, he confirms sources reports of the Suns getting a deal done with Budenholzer. He reveals,
“Mike Budenholzer has agreed to terms on a five-year, $50-plus million deal to become the new head coach of the Phoenix Suns, league sources tell The Athletic as well as Stadium. [The Phoenix] Suns land the two-time NBA Coach of the Year and Arizona native.
[Furthermore] the Suns hire Bucks champion Mike Budenholzer as their head coach on a deal expected to approach eight figures per year, league sources tell The Athletic. The Holbrook, Ariz., native will be tasked with optimizing Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal.”
Therefore, there is talent on the Suns. However, it will be about getting the most and best out of the big three; along with the rest of the roster. And looking at the head coach market, to the Phoenix Suns Budenholzer fits the bill.
