Sue Bird, gone. Candace Parker, done. Now the W could see another longtime baller say goodbye to the game we all know and love. On Thursday afternoon, the Phoenix Mercury released a video on what could be Diana Taurasi’s final WNBA game.
Of course, no official word from Taurasi has come down the pipeline. She very could have more left in the tank. Plus, be willing to comeback and continue to be a threat on the court.
Diana although 20 some years into her career; she has not faltered. She has still played very well. In fact, besides picking up a Paris Olympic gold medal; her WNBA team the Phoenix Mercury find themselves in the 2024 playoffs (ranked 3rd in terms of best record, 27-12). And thus competing for a championship title.
However, Taurasi doesn’t care for all of this retirement talk. And after impacting the W and winning three titles (three WNBA titles in 2007, 2009, and 2014). She has certainly earned that right. Nonetheless, Diana explains,
“When you dedicate your whole life, your whole career, to something; and you get the question of, ‘Why don’t you just retire?’ … It is a bit disrespectful.”
So then, where is all of this retirement indications coming from all of a sudden? Well, ironically, Taurasi’s own team. As mentioned at the outset; the Mercury put together and put out a thank you video. The video features her agent, fellow teammates; as well as her family and loved ones. It also features a montage of footage showcasing some of her biggest highlights on the court, in the Olympics; winning championships and even going all the way back to the day she was drafted into the league.

Furthermore, the 3 minute video also states that if this in fact Diana’s final regular season game; that they thank her for everything she has done. Could it be they know something we don’t? Certainly sounds like it. But will wait for Taurasi to make her final decision.
But until then, Phoenix is still working over time to honor this legendary star. Giving her flowers not just in words, but in merch. Mercury fans can now get their hands on an exclusive tee shirt at Thursday’s game.
