Phillies Sign Zack Wheeler To a Record Three Year Extension

Got to pay, the ace. Philadelphia gets the deal done before the official start of the 2024 season. The Phillies sign Zack Wheeler to a record three year extension; ensuring he’ll be staying on the mound for them through to 2027.

According to Paul Casella of MLB.com, there will be no opt-outs involved in this new deal. Since Wheeler will be falling under the protection of his 10 and 5 rights. Just to refresh your memory, these rights occur when: “Players have accrued 10 years of Major League service time. They also must of spent the past five consecutive years with the same team. If fitting the criteria; players are awarded 10-and-5 rights. Under these circumstances, a player can veto any trade scenario that is proposed.”

That’s very nice for Wheeler, some more stability. Especially, for how well he’s pitched. What are some other details regarding this extension? Casella continues,

“The extension covers 2025 to 2027 . At three years and 126 million, the extension is the largest average annual value in mlb history at 42 million per season.  It also features no opt outs and since wheelers 10 and 5 rights will kick in at the end of 2024.  He will be in Philly for years to come and clearly quite happy to do so. Wheeler’s extension caps an eventful stretch for the ace after he and his wife, Dominique, welcomed their third child earlier in the week. He just rejoined the club on Saturday after spending a few days away on paternity leave.”

Furthermore, this extension decision is something that Zack was wanting as well. He has fully bought into the Phillies organizational culture and loves what they have and are continuing to build. During a spring training media session, Zack Wheeler talks about a possible extended contract by stating,

“Hopefully, it does [happen],’ Wheeler said of a possible extension when he first arrived at Spring Training in mid-February. ‘I love it here. We’re happy here. It’s a good organization. We’re winning. All things are looking great and right. So, I’d love to be here.’”

As one can see, Wheeler is happy. And Philadelphia is grinning from ear to ear. Zack Wheeler has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since he arrived in 2020 and through 2023, putting up a 19.3 FWAR, the most in the majors by a pitcher in that 4 year span.

And Wheeler isn’t content with his success. He’s been working on improving his change up to become even more baffling to hitters. Therefore, the Phillies could see yet another amazing return on their investment. Truly, the guy is worth every cent.
