Philadelphia Eagles Trimmed Coaching Staff Head Coach Remains

Teams are winding down their seasons and holding press conferences. Today it was made official that the Philadelphia Eagles trimmed their coaching staff. But head coach Nick Sirianni remains. Sirianni specifically mentioned that offensive coordinator Brian Johnson was let go.

Other reports indicate that defensive coordinator Sean Desai was also fired. Desai had the play calling duties taken away from him in December. Matt Patricia took up the duty but he too has been fired. There will likely be other staffers leaving but it wasn’t specified who they will be.

A press conference was held jointly with GM Howie Roseman and head coach Nick Sirianni. Reporters asked how the OC firing factored in with quarterback Jalen Hurts. Sirianni indicated that the goal is to get their players to perform better and continue to grow.

He expects the new coordinator to bring in a scheme for the offense to run. And one in which the quarterback can excel. He also acknowledged the relationship between Hurts and Johnson and the difficulty in having to let people go.

Unfortunately it appears that Johnson was a fall guy for the late season collapse. Being tasked with implementing Sirianni’s scheme didn’t work out for Johnson. Especially since the scheme was “stale and uninspired.” There wasn’t much Johnson could do within the confines of the scheme. In addition, it’s been reported that staff members are upset about Johnson being fired. So Sirianni will have to work on appeasing both his staff and the Eagles’ front office.

It appears that the Eagles have already pulled the trigger on a new defensive coordinator. According to Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler on X (formerly Twitter):

The Dolphins and Vic Fangio have mutually agreed to part ways, sources tell me and @JFowlerESPN. Fangio now will be the top target for the Philadelphia Eagles to hire as their defensive coordinator, and a deal is expected. Miami is allowing Fangio to leave to be closer to his family in Pennsylvania. Fangio and the Eagles had an interest in working together in 2023, but the timing didn’t work. This time it will.
So things are happening in Philly. We’ll see if they turn out to be good or bad.
