It has been a lot of trading activities going on in the NFL this year. And the Philly team has joined the fray. The Philadelphia Eagles have traded for Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton. In exchange for a 2027 7th round pick. So, the man known as the Red Rifle from his days as a Cincinnati Bengal will now be a high-flying eagle. The flurry of activity is not a product of our imagination as ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted on his x.com account:

“If it seems like there have been more trades than ever, there have been. Since the 2026 new league year started last week, there have been 18 trades, including Andy Dalton today. From the day the 2025 new league year started until the NFL Draft, there were 15 trades. One week of the league year this year already has produced three more trades than there were over weeks last year.”

Nevertheless, with this trade Dalton will embark on a 16th season in the NFL. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. During those nine seasons with the Bengals, he led the team to five consecutive playoff appearances from 2011 to 2015. And he earned three Pro Bowl selections. Together Dalton and wide receiver A.J. Green set records for completions and yards by a rookie quarterback/receiver combination. However, Dalton was not fortunate enough to win in the playoffs which resulted in him being released by the Bengals in 2020 following four consecutive losing seasons.

After his release from Cincinnati, he joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, then the Chicago Bears in 2021 and the New Orleans Saints in 2022.

Things settled down for him in 2023 when he signed a two-year contract with the Carolina Panthers. He had been named the starter but was beaten out by the first-overall draft pick Bryce Young. However, in 2024 the Panthers benched Young and Dalton started for 5 weeks, going 1-4. But Young got his job back after Dalton suffered a thumb injury in a car accident. In 2025 he started one game but lost to the Buffalo Bills 40-9. So, after a three-year stint in Carolina Dalton will be moving on to Philadelphia pending passing the physical.

Hopefully he will pass his physical and join Jalen Hurts in the quarterback room. He will likely be the third option as 2023 sixth round pick Tanner McKee sits firmly in the No. 2 spot.
