After you win a championship, you definitely want to keep the winning going. Philadelphia took care of business last night getting the victory against their rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. But one glaring issue certainly stood out in the spotlight as the game preceded. Philly needed some help on defense; especially, with their intense, nightmarish schedule. On Friday the Birds immediately got to work addressing this situation, the Philadelphia Eagles made the move to sign former Lions DE Za’Darius Smith to a one-year deal.

This is a very good decision on the part of the Eagles. As we previously discussed, the Eagles defense has lost a LOT of players. A chunk of guys who were around just last season and helped the organization win a title. For instance, the Philadelphia defense lost 10 players since they won the Super Bowl earlier this year. Some of those players included Brandon Graham who retired and Darius Slay who was released to save on cap space and get younger on defense.

Therefore, it was imperative that Philly go get some help. Expeditiously. And that’s exactly what occurred. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network broke the news regarding the Smith signing. He states,

“Three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Za’Darius Smith is signing with the Eagles on a one-year deal, sources tell me and Ian Rapaport.

Smith has 69 career sacks, including nine last season. Now he joins the defending champs on a deal negotiated by Erik Burkhardt of ROC Nation.”

NFL insider, Jordan Schultz, backed up Pelissero’s report by adding, “BREAKING: The Eagles are signing 3x Pro Bowl OLB Za’Darius Smith to a 1-year deal with upside to $9M, per multiple sources. Philly adds to its pass-rush with Smith, who recorded 9 sacks with the Lions and Browns last season.”

Now that Philly has added some more pop to their defensive strategy; what is next for the Birds? Well, their next game is going to be a fun. A Super Bowl rematch between them and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes versus Hurts will always be cinema. So then, make sure you have your popcorn, BBQ, fries, little weenies and sliders ready in advance because you are not going to want to miss one minute. See the champion level showdown on Sunday, September 14.
