Philadelphia Eagles Scored First Victory of the 2025 NFL Season Over The Dallas Cowboys

It was an offensive scoring fest to start the first regular season game. The first seven possessions resulted in seven scores. And Jalen Carter got himself ejected from the game before getting to play on defense. Ahhhhh… Football is BACK! Nevertheless, the Philadelphia Eagles scored the first victory of the 2025 NFL season over the Dallas Cowboys.

One of the most viral social media moments of this matchup came at the very beginning of the game. Carter had got into an exchange with Dak Prescott after the opening kickoff. And Carter could be seen spitting on Prescott which disqualified him from the game.

However, despite that altercation both offenses came out firing and they certainly put a damper on the defenses. But we must remember that the Philadelphia defense lost 10 players since they won the Super Bowl earlier this year. Some of those players included Brandon Graham who retired and Darius Slay who was released to save on cap space and get younger on defense. And we’ve all heard about the Cowboys trading pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. But they did bring in Kenny Clark to help improve the run defense.

Nevertheless, both defenses struggled throughout the night on the running and passing plays. Both offenses scored touchdowns on their opening drives and on their second possessions as well. The Eagles finally held the Cowboys to field goals on their third and fourth possessions. However, on the whole quarterbacks Dak Prescott and Jalen Hurts took charge of their respective offenses and orchestrated scoring drives throughout the first half. The Eagles were up 20-21 heading into halftime.

Philadelphia got the ball to start the third quarter and during the drive the Cowboys managed to sack Jalen Hurts for an 8-yard loss. That led to the drive ending with a 58-yard field goal by kicker Jake Elliott.

How would Dallas respond? The Cowboys went with three runs in a row to start the third quarter. Following was an incomplete pass and then back to the run. Miles Sanders broke out with a 49 yard gain that got them to the Philly 11-yard line.

But George Pickens was flagged for an unnecessary roughness penalty. Two incomplete passes later, Reed Blankenship was also flagged for unnecessary roughness, putting the Cowboys back on the Philly 11-yard line. Disaster struck when Sanders ran the ball again and fumbled it and the Eagles recovered it.

And then the weather decided to get involved. Due to lightening in the area the game was suspended. After about an hour delay the game resumed and the Eagles ended up having to punt the ball for the first time. The Cowboys then had to punt the ball on their next possession also.

Both offenses stalled and had to punt again. In fact the fourth quarter consisted of punts and one turnover on downs by the Cowboys. They went for a 4th & 3 and couldn’t convert. As a result the Eagles got the ball back with 1:54 left on the clock. Jalen Hurts picked up the crucial first down with a 4-yard run. So all that was left to do was kneel on the ball for the 20-24 victory.

Jalen Hurts ran the ball into the endzone to score the Eagles’ first two touchdowns. However, it was a quiet night for running back Saquon Barkley. He gained 60 yards on 18 rushing attempts and scored a touchdown. It was an even quieter night for Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Although he had seven catches for 110 yards, he also had four dropped passes (not good for fantasy, missed opportunities). Two of them came in the fourth quarter on Dallas’ final drive trying to get into scoring range. The ball went right through his outstretched hands.

But it’s Week 1 and the season is just beginning. Everyone has to knock off the rust and get back up to speed. Tomorrow we’ll see the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers go head-to-head in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Yes, the NFL is back!
