Philadelphia Eagles Punched Their Ticket To The Super Bowl

It was the 181st meeting between the two teams. But it was the first time they had met in the NFC Championship game. It featured an overachieving rookie quarterback versus the No. 1 NFL defense. Could the Commanders defense stop Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley? Despite the Commanders’ astounding turnaround it wasn’t enough to subdue their division rivals. The Philadelphia Eagles punched their ticket to the Super Bowl.

The first half started with an extended drive by the Washington Commanders who ate up over seven minutes of the clock. There were several short passes so they only got 54 yards on 18 plays but picked up a couple of fourth down conversions. However, they had to settle for a 34-yard field goal. Once the Eagles finally got the ball they immediately scored. Hurts handed the ball off to Barkley who took it 60 yards for the touchdown.

On the Commanders next drive they picked up a first down but then WR Dyami Brown fumbled the ball. It was recovered by the Eagles’ Reed Blankenship. They wasted no time in taking advantage of the turnover. On the sixth play of the drive, Barkley ran in the end zone for the 4-yard touchdown. The Commanders were down by 11 points but didn’t get discouraged. Jayden Daniels found Brown for a 24 yard completion putting them in field goal range. They kicked a 46-yard field goal.

The Eagles then worked their way down the field but a 9-yard sack on Hurts caused them to attempt a 54-yard field goal which was no good. In five plays the Commanders scored again with a 36-yard touchdown bomb from Daniels to Terry McLaurin. However, they were way off on their failed 2 pt. conversion attempt.

Not to be outdone Philly went on a drive that lasted over five minutes. A 31-yard pass completion and a defensive pass interference penalty got them to the 1-yard line. Hurts ran it in for the touchdown. But then there was an unnecessary roughness penalty on the Commanders. So the Eagles attempted the 2 pt. conversion from the 1-yard line. And they were stopped by the Commanders.

On the kickoff return Jeremy McNichols fumbled the ball and the Eagles recovered. And then scored another touchdown by A.J. Brown. With just 37 seconds left in the half the Commanders managed to score a 42-yard field goal. The Eagles led 15-27 at halftime.

The second half started with each team having to punt. They they each scored a touchdown with the Commanders converting a 2 pt. attempt. Following that the Commanders forced the Eagles to punt as they buried Barkley in the backfield. However, disaster struck after Austin Ekeler caught a pass for a first down. He got up to run but the Eagles punched the ball out and recovered it.

Starting at their own 49 yard line, Hurts found Brown for a 19-yard reception then a 22-yard rush by Barkley. Philly couldn’t push the ball into the end zone from the 1-yard line. After that the Commanders had three encroachment penalties in a row. Which put the ball practically on the goal line. And Hurts ran it in for his third rushing touchdown of the game. The Commanders converted a 4th & 6 to keep their drive alive but the Eagles were all over Daniels causing a 4th &12. The Commanders went for it but couldn’t convert as Daniels was sacked.

Washington Commanders Come Up Short In Championship Game

The Eagles made them pay for that turnover on downs. On third down Jeremy Chinn was called for defensive pass interference putting the Eagles on the Commanders 8-yard line. Dallas Goedert caught a 4-yard pass and then Barkley punched it in the end zone for the 4-yard touchdown. The Commanders were moving the ball when Daniels took a shot at the end zone on 3rd & 10 at PHI 29. But Quinyon Mitchell intercepted the ball. Then Will Shipley, coming in for Barkley, had a 57 yard rush and then a couple plays later capped the drive with the 2-yard touchdown.

With three minutes to go the Commanders let the clock run as they ran the ball four times and turned it over on downs. The Eagles kneeled on the ball and earned their place in the Super Bowl. Final score 23-55, Eagles.

The Commanders had five turnovers the last time they played the Eagles but came back to win the game in the fourth quarter. This time they had four turnovers but there was no magical comeback. The Eagles defense made the Commanders earn every yard they got and it wasn’t enough.

What’s Next For Washington Commanders?

But no doubt the Commanders will return next season hungry for another shot at the big game. With a year under his belt Jayden Daniels should be even better next year. Unless he suffers from a sophomore slump. Will Zach Ertz return for another season or will he throw in the towel?

As for the Eagles, this is their fifth time being the NFC Champions. And have won a single-season franchise-record 17 wins, including playoffs. Now they have to wait a few hours to see who they will be facing in the Super Bowl, Chiefs or Bills.
